A lot of people seem to mistake the 2. This is for a clear cut explanation of the two and the difference.

Simply said, like in most rpg video games you have two main things, HP and MP. Life Energy basically means HP or Hit Points and Ki means MP or magic power.Thus when someone is empty of ki he will not die he just can't do his special attacks e.g goku's kamehameha wave or ki blasts,but when someone is empty of life energy they will die.
