The Dragon Ball Super outline is a draft of key characters and details for Dragon Ball Super created by original author Akira Toriyama. The draft is taken and expanded upon by Toei Animation and Toyotarou for their respective media.

On occasion Toei also choose not to incorporate things from the outline into the anime,[1][2][3] or change elements of it.[4] Toyotarou is also known to have left out at least one detail from Toriyama,[5] however he will not implement anything or make changes without discussing it with Toriyama first.[6][7]

Overview[]

God of Destruction Beerus Saga[]

  • Toriyama suggested that the Battle of Gods movie be adapted into a saga of the Dragon Ball Super anime.[8]

Golden Frieza Saga[]

  • Toriyama suggested that the Resurrection ‘F’ movie be adapted into a saga of the Dragon Ball Super anime.[8]

Universe 6 Saga[]

"Future" Trunks Saga[]

Universe Survival Saga[]

Broly[]

  • Toriyama wrote the full version of the script.[22] He added much to the character of Broly, notably a sense of innocence.[22]
  • Designs for Cheelai, Lemo and all of Broly's appearances aside from his green-haired Legendary Super Saiyan state.[23]

Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga[]

Granolah the Survivor Saga[]

  • Toriyama wrote the draft for this arc.[28] Including elements such as the new information on the Namekians' origins, the introduction of a new set of Dragon Balls, as well as Zuno's role in the story.[29]
  • Toriyama and Toyotarou decided that Vegeta's development would go down a different path from Goku's.[29]
  • Toriyama designed Monaito, originally naming him Slug before changing his name to avoid confusion.[30]
  • Toriyama designed the Sugarians.[30]
  • The Heeters were created by Toriyama.[29] Toriyama helped Toyotarou with his designs for Granolah and the Heeters,[30] putting emphasis on getting the Heeters' designs right.[29]

Super Hero[]

  • Toriyama provides the original concept, wrote the script (including every detail of the dialogue), and drew designs for the film (changing pre-existing characters to their manga designs rather than those used in the anime), including minor characters like Pan's teacher, and the Penenko toys bought for Piccolo.[31] It has been said that he is even more invested in this film than the prior three he wrote.[32]

High School Saga[]

  • Toyotarou had wanted to do a spin-off about Trunks, prompting Toriyama to instead tell him to use him as the main character of the new story arc.[33]
  • Decided alongside Toyotarou and other staff that the story should be a smaller more simple story set on Earth, with different main characters than Goku and Vegeta, focused on superheroes.[33]
  • Toriyama decided that Trunks would be a superhero and gave numerous new bits of insight about Trunks as a character and explained the circumstances behind why Trunks would become a superhero. He gave the overview that Trunks is scatterbrained but with a strong sense of justice, not letting even the slightest bad deed go unpunished - with the scene where Trunks flicks a disposed can that was going to hit a baby back at the person who discarded it being the example.[33]
  • Toriyama gave a lot of new insight on Goten as a character.[33]
  • Toriyama came up with the scene between Dr. Brief and Bikini in "Super Heroes are Born".[33]
  • Toriyama said that the Alpha Series should be funny-looking characters; not too scary or real looking.[33]
  • Toriyama created the final designs for the Saiyaman X Suits.[34]
  • Toriayama drew part of "Super Heroes are Born".[35]
  • Toriyama made corrections to parts of the saga.[36]

Super Hero Saga[]

  • Chapters 91 through to 103 were written by Toriyama, including almost all of their dialogue and plot points.[36]

Material added by Toyotarou[]

"Future" Trunks Saga[]

Universe Survival Saga[]

Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga[]

Granolah the Survivor Saga[]

  • Toyotarou came up with the concept behind Granolah and pitched it to Toriyama.[29]
  • Designed Granolah and the Heeters, with help from Toriyama.[39]
  • Chose to incorporate Bardock into the plot, incorporating details about the character from talks with Toriyama.[38]
  • Created Ultra Ego. The name was chosen to be in line with Ultra Instinct and fit with Vegeta. The appearance was based off Beerus', as he is also a user of Ultra Ego.[38]
  • Wrote Flayk with the intent of him being Granolah's father - though this has not been discussed with Toriyama.[6]
  • Chose weapons which Gas would use, such as his four pronged propeller-like blades.[6]
  • Alongside Victory Uchida, decided that Frieza's new form would be Black.[33]

High School Saga[]

  • Toyotarou had wanted to do a spin-off about Trunks, prompting Toriyama to instead tell him to use him as the main character of the new story arc.[33]
  • Decided alongside Toriyama and other staff that the story should be a smaller more simple story set on Earth, with different main characters than Goku and Vegeta, focused on superheroes.[33]
  • Toyotarou drew up the scene where Trunks flicks a disposed can that was going to hit a baby back at the person who discarded it being the example with guidance from Toriyama.[33]
  • Toyotarou added in romantic comedy between Trunks and Mai.[33]
  • Trunks and Goten's classmates were created and designed in a way that gave a similar feel to Gohan's time in high school during the Great Saiyaman Saga.[33]
  • Toyotarou gave the Alpha Series a touch of cuteness and themed them on Halloween due to Toriyama saying that they should be funny-looking characters; not too scary or real looking.[33]
  • Toyotarou created initial designs for the Saiyaman X Suits, being the one to incorporate a scarf into Trunks'.[34]

Super Hero Saga[]

  • Toyotarou created a few bits of dialogue and plot points.[36]

Material added by Toei[]

"Future" Trunks Saga[]

  • Toei chose to have Goku Black wear a Time Ring.[1]
  • Toei had the 1-hour rule for Potara fusion not apply to Fused Zamasu, unlike in Toriyama's original draft.[2][3]

Universe Survival Saga[]

  • Toei designed all of the Pride Troopers aside from Jiren, Top and Dyspo. They also invented Ribrianne's anime base state: "Brianne de Chateau". Toei created Kale due to Broly's popularity.[15]
  • The personality that Top ended up having was created by Toei for Jiren, after Toriyama explained Jiren's nature in more detail it was given to Top.[15]
  • Dyspo's cocky personality was developed after his voice actor was selected.[15]
  • Frieza giving energy to Goku so that he could recover his stamina.[15]
  • Android 18 and Ribrianne's fight being about their different ideals of love.[15]
  • Vegeta's Super Saiyan God SS Evolved form.[40]

Broly[]

  • Shintani designed Broly's green-haired Full Power Super Saiyan form and integrated it into the film's final battle.[23]
  • Toei decided upon the aspect of all the film's battles, as Toriyama does not go into detail on them beyond who is fighting who.[41]
  • It was decided to change the setting from being an icy environment mid-battle to make it more visually interesting.[22] At one point, battles in space, on the surface of the sun, and inside the Earth itself, where planned but where cut for time.[22]
  • Some of the script supplied by Toriyama was shortened.[22]
  • Added several homages to the Dragon Ball Z Broly trilogy.[22]

Super Hero[]

  • Akio Iyoku pushed for Gohan being co-star of the film.[42]
  • Toei decided upon the aspect of all the film's battles, as Toriyama does not go into detail on them beyond who is fighting who.[41]

Other[]

  • Toriyama's original draft on the Tournament of Power specifically noted that Piccolo was to be eliminated by Damom. It is thus likely but unconfirmed that Damom was one of the characters created by him.[15]
  • The Namekian Book of Legends was mentioned by Akira Toriyama in his interview explaining Yamoshi. Prior to this, this book had only ever been mentioned once in the anime version of Dragon Ball Super. It is unconfirmed whether Toriyama or Toei came up with the concept of the Namekian Book of Legends.[43][44]
  • Frieza's end goal of defeating the Omni-Kings (which previously was only mentioned in the anime) was brought up in promotion for Broly (though it was not mentioned in the final film). It is unconfirmed whether Toriyama or Toei came up with this as Frieza's goal.[45]
  • The manga and anime share numerous details, it is unknown if every detail which consistently occurred in both versions of Dragon Ball Super were created by Toriyama or if some were created by Toyotarou and Toei.
