"It's the only way Tien. Don't worry. I'm not afraid. And if I can save you, then it's worth dying for."
— Chiaotzu in "The Power of Nappa"

Farewell, Mr. Tien (さよなら天さん) is the self-destruct attack Chiaotzu used against Nappa in the Vegeta Saga, after the Saiyan brute easily beat Tien Shinhan, Chiaotzu's best friend.

Overview

After latching on, Chiaotzu's body is covered in a white glow, and when Nappa attempts to grab Chiaotzu, he is seen taking damage to his hand as if he had received an electrical shock. Nappa further tries to break free by smashing his back into a boulder but Chiaotzu does not budge as if he was stuck there. Even though he used the technique, Nappa did not receive any damage, making the sacrifice in vain.

Chiaotzu explodes

Chiaotzu's sacrifice, as seen in Krillin's flashback

Later, while sparring against Piccolo on King Kai's Planet, Chiaotzu grabs on to Piccolo's back and begins to partly initiate the "Farewell, Mr. Tien" technique. While Piccolo was distracted by Tien Shinhan and Yamcha, Chiaotzu jumped on the Namekian's back and started to shock him, but before he could complete it, Piccolo plucked him off and slammed him on the ground. This time, Chiaotzu was covered in a blue aura.

Appearances in games

Under the name Psychic Shock (or Super Skill or Psychic Skill in some translations), it is one of Chiaotzu's ki attacks in the RPG Dragon Ball Z: Legend of the Super Saiyan. Chiaotzu also performs the move in the arcade game Dragon Ball Z: W Bakuretsu Impact. "Farewell, Mr. Tien" is Chiaotzu's Ultimate Blast in the Budokai Tenkaichi series and the Raging Blast series: Chiaotzu yells "Goodbye, Tien!" before performing it and, at the end of the attack (when Chiaotzu explodes), Tien is heard yelling "Chiaotzu!!!" The attack is also seen in a cutscene in Dragon Ball Z: Idainaru Son Goku Densetsu.

It is usable by members of the New Crane School in Dragon Ball Online under the name Self Destruct.

Trivia

  • In several games, Tien can be heard yelling "Chiaotzu!", including if the technique is being used on Tien himself.
