Summary[]

Reporters.Ep

Reporters chased by Nappa

Nappa chafes with boredom during the three-hour wait, and Vegeta tells that he wants to personally teach Goku a lesson for defying them and Raditz. Gohan is feeling guilty because of his own cowardliness and apologizes to Piccolo. Still upset, Piccolo turns right back and orders Gohan to go home. Gohan begins to do so, but Nappa's bullying prompts him to stay; Gohan angrily tells Nappa that he does not scare him anymore and he will not run away.

A news crew approaches to film the battle, but Nappa catches them and decides to take them out with Vegeta's permission, the only condition being that Nappa not waste enough energy that he ends up sweating. Nappa follows the crew's truck all the way to the news campsite, and obliterates everyone present, rendering those at Kame House unable to watch the fight any longer. At sea, Nappa spots the naval and air forces and takes them out with little effort while enjoying himself greatly, although he admits that he may have come close to breaking a sweat from the last bit, and hopes Vegeta didn't notice the close call. Goku, meanwhile, finally arrives at the Check-In Station.

Goku catches Senzu Beans while flying near Korin Tower

Nappa flies around the Earth and blows up another city, killing countless people for mere pleasure until the three hours are finally up. Nappa rejoins Vegeta at the battlefield and removes his damaged Battle Armor. Piccolo makes a plan with Krillin and Gohan to grab Nappa's tail and render him powerless, as Goku did with Raditz.

Kami meets Goku at the Check-In Station and teleports him back to Earth, where he receives two Senzu Beans from Korin and speeds towards the battlefield on the Flying Nimbus to conserve energy.

Differences from the manga[]

  • The three hour break passes uneventfully in the manga whereas the anime expands it out:
    • Gohan laments having froze up when Nappa was coming at him before, wistfully mentioning that Tien Shinhan might have survived otherwise. He never mentions this in the manga.
    • Piccolo only berates Gohan once in the manga without too much fuss. He is more harsh in the anime where he rubs in how Gohan's fear ultimately led to Tien giving his life for nothing. Krillin does his best to defend Gohan due to the latter being so young, but Piccolo soon chides Gohan for asking for more training during their reprieve and turns his back while ordering his seemingly failed protégé to go home. A disheartened Gohan begins walking away until Nappa shoots a ki blast in his direction and mocks the boy for his cowardice. Gohan counters that he was just going to use the bathroom, but when Nappa demands he speak up, Gohan chooses to insult Nappa instead (saying in Japanese that "[his] momma’s belly button sticks out!" or "[he] smells"), angering him yet amusing Vegeta.
    • Nappa having some "fun" where he terrorizes the human reporters and wreaks destruction against a fleet of battleships is exclusive to the anime. In addition, he destroys at least one more city before returning to the scene of the fight.
  • Master Roshi and the others at Kame House following the TV coverage of the battle is exclusive to the anime.
  • Nappa is already shown with his armor removed in the manga, whilst the anime does depict him tossing it off, making a large thud.

Trivia[]

  • In the Japanese version when Gohan insults Nappa, instead of saying he smells (mentioned in the other dubs) Gohan's goes more towards Nappa's mother "Your momma's belly-button sticks out!" insulting the Saiyan even more so. This is also the first and last time, Nappa's mother or either of his parents were ever mentioned in the series.
    • In the Ocean dub however, Nappa's mother was mentioned by Krillin in comedic sense after Goku defeated him.
  • Oolong and Bulma's exchange is censored in English. Both dubs have Oolong lamenting having asked Bulma about what Earth's fate will be if the saiyans succeed in killing their friends, which leads to Bulma berating him for his cowardice when he tries to downplay it as a "medical condition". The original Japanese version instead had Oolong regret not having collected more women’s underwear before the seeming end of the world (though he does pray for Goku to come soon just beforehand), only for Bulma to scold that no lady would be stupid enough to let him near her undergarments in the first place.
  • This is the final episode to feature Goku and Kami together on-screen.
  • King Yemma will not make another appearance until the start of the Other World Saga.
  • The minor joke of Nappa promising to Vegeta not break a sweat during his "fun time" is an invention of the Funimation dub. It is later brought up after Nappa destroys the Navy Fleet that he might have broken a sweat from that action, laughing while hoping Vegeta won't notice.
  • Footage of Nappa destroying East City from "The Darkest Day” with his Volcano Explosion is used while he is destroying a city just before the break ends. It has the side effect of depicting Nappa with his armor wholly intact and his scouter which he removed in the aforementioned episode.
  • Nappa discarding his armor makes a heavy thud when it hits the ground. This contradicts what is established about Battle Armor being made of a stretchy-yet-durable substance that helps to repel attacks, as Vegeta tells Gohan and Krillin in "Captain Ginyu... The Frog".
