Manga and Anime

Trunks is able to achieve the Super Saiyan form much earlier than his father and future counterpart. Due to a combination of his Saiyan heritage and having trained under his father Vegeta at an early age, Trunks is a capable fighter. He continuously trains with his father, Vegeta, in the Gravity Room because Vegeta wants Trunks to be stronger than Goten. While preparing for the 25th World Martial Arts tournament, training under 100 times gravity is challenging for Trunks. However, when he transforms into a Super Saiyan, he is able to move easily in the Gravity Room.

At the age of eight, he became the Junior Division Champion of the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament following his defeat of Goten (won by cheating). Due to his strong friendship and friendly rivalry with Goten, both are shown to work well as a team, this made him and Goten ideal candidates for learning the Fusion Dance. In the anime, after training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber for a week and managing to have Gotenks achieve Super Saiyan 3, Trunks states that he and Goten have become more than twice as strong as before.

However, it was too dangerous for Trunks (as well as Goten) to confront villains such as Majin Buu without either the assistance of the other Z Fighters and/or the use of the Fusion Dance to turn into the mighty Gotenks. When peace came after defeating Kid Buu, Trunks stopped training.

In Dragon Ball Super, Trunks only fought with Goten or fused with him, due to the extreme gap in power between himself and their enemies. Despite being fused as Gotenks, the duo often was overpowered by foes such as Beerus and Duplicate Vegeta, although they were able to damage Tagoma and were able to interest the newly revived Frieza. In the anime, Super Saiyan Trunks' power at maximum was enough for Goku to detect from Beerus' planet at the start of the "Future" Trunks Saga. After meeting his future counterpart, Trunks attempts to re motivate him by insulting him and attacking him as a Super Saiyan. While the fight was unseen, we are able to see post battle Trunks even as a Super Saiyan was not even a remote challenge for Future Trunks, who appeared no worse for wear while Trunks himself was completely exhausted.

By the time of the Universe Survival Saga, in the manga Super Saiyan Trunks was able to hold off multiple Cell Juniors at once, though he appeared to be at a disadvantage. Vegeta also tells Android 17 that Trunks is just as good as the Trunks 17 knew, despite being a kid.

In the second portion of the Super Hero Saga, Trunks and Goten have not trained in six months, however as Super Saiyans they prove able the just-awakened Cell Max alongside the Gamma Androids, who are impressed by their performance against the giant, however once Cell Max's power builds further he quickly overpowers the four.

In Dragon Ball GT at the start of the series it is stated that Trunks has not been training seriously. in the Black Star Dragon Ball Saga he is shown to be stronger than Pan in even his base form. He is able to kill Cardinal Mutchy Mutchy in his Super Saiyan form. He is also able to somewhat keep up with Goku against Luud. Trunks is also stated by Pan to be the second strongest on Earth (though he corrects her by saying Gohan, Piccolo & his father are stronger than him.) Dr. Myuu is interested in Trunks' power, and remarks that he'd make a fine Machine Mutant.

In the Baby Saga, when Goku states that Rilldo is stronger than Majin Buu, Trunks states that he is getting riled up, excited to fight him (However he does not, because of the plan he and Giru came up with in order to get the Dragon Balls back). Seeing the enraged Pan knock down Rilldo, Trunks considers the possibility that she is stronger than him. Goku also remarks that he found it strange that Trunks was beaten so easily, which gave away his plan to Goku. He is later shown to be much stronger than infant Baby and was too strong for Baby to control. Baby even went as far as to describe his power as "bottomless". When in control of Goten's body, Baby notes that he will need Vegeta's body to surpass Trunks. When Trunks attacks Golden Great Ape Baby, the latter now finds his power sad (due to the now massive gap).

During the Super 17 Saga of Dragon Ball GT, in his base form - via a sneak attack - Trunks is strong enough to defeat Yakon with a single ki blast, and when he and Goten fire a combined ki blast at the off-guard Android 19 they are able to destroy him. Trunks also possesses sword skills, as shown when he wields the Brave Sword as an adult in Dragon Ball GT.

Films

Working as a team Trunks and Goten were able to take on powerful fighters like Broly and Bio-Broly. Though they were no match for Broly and were only able to damage him a little.

Like his counterpart, Trunks is shown to be a capable Swordsman and was entrusted with Tapion's Brave Sword following Hirudegarn's death in Dragon Ball Z: Wrath of the Dragon.

OVAs

In Dragon Ball: The Return of Son Goku and Friends!, Trunks and Goten are able to take on Abo and Kado who are the same rank as the Ginyu Force and a power of 530,000, similar to Frieza.

Video games

In Dragon Ball Xenoverse, in an altered history of the Super 17 Saga, Trunks' fight with a powered up Nappa proved to be difficult even in his Super Saiyan form with aid of the Future Warrior.

In the Adventure Mode taking place after GT it is noted that it would be impossible for GT Trunks to defeat Frieza (from the Battle of Namek) or Cell (from the Cell Games), and that Pan was catching up to him in power, when fighting as a Super Saiyan he is completely outmatched by base Goku - who defeats him using just one tenth of his power - with Trunks being in such an awe of 10% power Goku that he notes he is on a whole other level.

Inspired by Gohan's book Groundbreaking Science, in Age 805 Trunks along with his best friend Goten became the founders of the Kikoukenjutsu Sword Style and through intense training Trunks developed his natural potential as a master swordsman alongside Goten, leading to the foundation of the Kikoukenjutsu Sword School. In Age 820, at the age of 54 both he and Goten (age 53) used their school's sword-based style to defeat an army Jigglers during an invasion of Earth by the remnants of the Frieza Force following the death of Mr. Satan.

Trunks (GT) as a Super Saiyan

‎Trunks gains the power to become a Super Saiyan at a very young age. He was capable transforming before his first appearance onscreen during his training with his father, Vegeta, while they are preparing for the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament by training inside a gravity chamber; the Super Saiyan transformation allows Trunks to withstand, and easily run around at 150 times the gravity of Earth, which he was barely able to walk around before transforming.[3] He briefly uses the Super Saiyan form to fight Goten during the Grand Finals of Junior Division, and he uses it several more times during battles in Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball GT. Trunks uses the form in Dragon Ball Super as well but seldomly fights due to the extreme gap in power between himself and the foes, often fusing with Goten instead. Trunks only uses this form in an unseen fight with his Future counterpart but is assumed to have been badly beaten and he is virtually exhausted upon seeing him post battle while his Future counterpart is perfectly fine.

In Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout, Trunks is referred to as Super Trunks in this form.

Goten and Trunks fused together to become Gotenks

Gotenks is the fusion created when Trunks and Goten perform the Fusion Dance. Gotenks' power far surpasses either of the fighters' individual strengths, as he attains not only the Super Saiyan form, but also the Super Saiyan 3 form. Trunks and Goten are capable of fusing into Gotenks within 0.05 seconds.[4] They use the technique several times as kids. As young adults, in Dragon Ball GT, Trunks and Goten are tempted to fuse into Gotenks to try and help their fathers but are told not to by Gohan. The Fused Warrior Gotenks shares both Trunks and Goten's playfulness as well as their special attacks and new moves that Goten and Trunks do not have, such as Super Ghost Kamikaze Attack as well as Galactic Donut or Charging Ultra Buu Buu Volleyball. The Adult version of Gotenks featured in Dragon Ball Heroes has a new Super Attack called Burning Kamehameha.

Incorrect Style Fusions

Main article: Failed Fusions The Incorrect Style Fusions of Trunks and Goten are the result of Trunks and Goten incorrectly performing the Fusion Dance which resulted in the creation of two failed versions of Gotenks that are considerably weaker than their fused counterparts individually. The first failed version of Gotenks is a fat Gotenks who was created when Trunks extends his finger at the last minute when he and Goten say, "-sion!" while the second failed version of Gotenks, which is a skinny Gotenks, is created as a result of a lack of coordination between Goten and Trunks as when they both say "HAAH", their fingers do not meet each other correctly.

A Male Earthling Ultra Fusion in Dragon Ball Fusions

By using the Five-Way Fusion technique developed by the Ginyu Force, Kid Trunks can fuse with Goten, Kid Goku, Pan, and Tekka to create a powerful fusion called an Ultra Fusion which appears in Dragon Ball Fusions. The Ultra Fusion's race (Saiyan, Earthling, Alien, Offworlder, or Namekian), gender, and voice are determined by the one who initiates the fusion. If initiated by Trunks or Goten, the Fusion will take the form of a Male Earthling (all Saiyan/Earthling hybrids are classified as Earthlings in Dragon Ball Fusions). If initiated by Pan or Female Earthling Tekka the result will be a female Earthling. If initiated by Kid Goku, the result will be a Male Saiyan. Outside the main story, Kid Trunks can perform the fusion with any 4 members of Tekka's Team.

Trunks is a natural born genius, having inherited Bulma's intelligence. He hasn't had to study during his time in the elite Blue Hal High School.[5]
