Goku is ASIAN (well, technically saiyan that coincidentally looks asian and landed in asia)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! people argue that he has light skin and wide eyes, but asians can have both of those things. Krillin and Tien Shinhan have wide eyes, and can you really claim that they're not asian?! and if all these people aren't, then where are the asian people in dragonball, or japanese-made anime in general?

ok[]

have you realy said why do people in japenese anime/manga look asian

because japan is in asia

goku does not look asian get a pic of an asian person and put it next goku they look nothing alike

Stop being stupid[]

Dragon World =/= our world. The entirety of their world is a mix of Japan, China, Korea, and the Middle East (not sure where that one fits, but still), with a few dashes of other places thrown in randomly. Regardless of how much your weeaboo senses tell you he must be Asian, you're wrong, as you yourself even said. Saiyans are not Asians. Their features are the same as humans, but they are not and will never be related to any race on Dragon World's Earth. --DARK 16:28, August 5, 2011 (UTC)

Sayian is an anagram for asian(y) :p

no one is asian[]

i personally think that all people in dbz look to be not asian. with some exceptions, (i.e. middle eastern, black, and indian) most people look plain old caucasian

Very few people in anime look Asian, so that argument isn't very effective. The style in and of itself tries to mimic Caucasian appearance. Usually you have to look for clues with the characters to figure out what they are. --DARK 18:12, August 5, 2011 (UTC)

In the very beginning of the Dragonball manga Akira Toriyama says that he didn't give a location for the series to create more freedom of setting and such. Therefore if there is no location in the series, Asia does not exist, therefore race does not exist (specific to a region). Akira Toriyama drew Officer Black as African-American because he wanted to (and because of his name), and he made other characters like Uub and Nam brown because of their circumstances, but other than that, I think he wanted the main characters to be ambiguous in race. You'd know if a character was a specific race because Akira Toriyama made it apparent.

________________

Edit towards this dude up there ^ . UH NO. Akira Toriyama said that he was inspired to make Dragonball after a trip to CHINA. Besides, I think he was a bit racist. He made all the villains at the time "Red Ribbon Army" white people.

Not Asian[]

Just because it's an anime doesn't mean the people are Asian. The Solar system may be the same, but the Dragon Ball Earth looks nothing like ours. There are no regions or countries, therefore Goku or anybody else was never meant to be or look like an Asian, which he doesn't. - Zenoftw

What's with Japanese artists?[]

Like the only one I think who even comes close to asian is Chi Chi but it is kind of weird that they don't look asian and follow asian tradition.Plus it may because I'm not white but it always bothered me how 90% of the population in every DBZ episode(the tournament and city ones are a good example)are white. The only asian I've seen is the one kid who tries to take Saiyaman's photo at the tournament, and every black person rubs me the wrong way, they make them dark as hell(not all black people are super dark!)and give them those annoying "pink" lips.Especially Killa I couldn't even understand a word he said! And theres like little to zero hispanics I've only seen like 1 in every huge crowd scene and he usually has the racist "pink" lips thing going on.It's my only gripe with DB/DBZ.I guess that's how Japanese envision the world.I guess most people don't comment on this cause they are white so they don't care but it just something that ALWAYS made me uncomfortable.

You shouldn't be so sensitive to other peoples stereotyping

This is pretty old. But I want to get a few things through your thick skulls.

Saiyans had an asian appearance, distinguished from that of the RED RIBBON army.

The Red Ribbon army were portrayed as CAUCASIANS, and clearly looked caucasians, with a few blacks in it, the Red Ribbon Army were the Villains.

Yamcha, Krillin, Tein were asian.

The Nameks clearly had a middle eastern look to them.

White people who keep on saying the Saiyans looked white, will never, ever, approach the subject of the Red Ribbon army and there obvious white features that look different from Goku, Vegeta, even Yamcha and Tein.

If you want to see Caucasian, look at the RED RIBBON ARMY.[]

I fail to see the difference in nationality between the martial artists in the show versus the "regular people". It was just a different art style. Goku SS3Shakuran13Tapion with bladeThisDragonFistGokuHirudegarnMovie13endsKonatsian wizard with effectsNOW!SS3Rush 21:30, May 11, 2012 (UTC)
Red Ribbon army werent Martial artists. They were white people. Avoiding the subject are we? LOL Exactly. By the way I love how you white folks say "its about race and they all look white, now you say its a different style in drawing". Go to youtube and look up Racist white gets destroyed, you white people never have anything to back up your racial arguements".

Its open to interpretation[]

Its not set on OUR Earth. Theres neither a Europe/Americas or Asia. Their eyes are wide. Lets be honest, we all assosiate Asians with "not-so-wide-eyes" (trying not to be racist xD), hence you'de assume that the main cast are more Western. Tien and Krillin dont have to be Asians either, people from the West can become monks too. Its completely open to interpretation, theres Western dressed/looking people, and Asian dressed/looking people (The western people tending to look more like the main cast).

I believe that the main cast are Western, granted characters like Chi Chi, and perhaps Videl are an exception. Their facial features just seem too broud and defined to be Asian (NO OFFENCE INTENDED)

Like I said, there is no right or wrong answer, its not our Earth, theres no Asians, Westerners, Mexicans or Eskimos. Its alll made up. :)

Sorry in advanced...[]

I know this is going to rub you the wrong way, and I'm sorry for that. I understand the frustration you have right now, I've had it many times with people who argue characters from the Bleach and Narutoverse aren't black like Killer Bee, Tosen, A, etc. But this is a little different, I hate to say it but Toriyama drew them with typically Caucasian features. These eyes aren't just wide my friend, there is no semblance of an eye fold on any of the characters, that would convince me of your argument completely, but it's not there...on top of that in their SS transformations they gain blonde hair and blue eyes, both Caucasian features (yes I know it's a transformation but that says something about how Toriyama portrayed his characters). You're point about the Red Ribbon Army is weak, that's just how non-fighting characters or ordinary humans are drawn. The eyes look different, their facial features aren't very distinguished and they lack muscle tone. Characters like Sharpner are drawn that way too (with different facial features like eye shape). You might be right with Tienshinhan (his eyes do look different compared to the other characters) but everyone else is a stretch.

But to be honest, mangaka like Toriyama take a lot of creative licensing with their characters, I mean Krillin doesn't even have a nose lol, that would mean he's not even human. If the DBZ characters were to walk the Earth like most people I would most likely consider them white, but just for the record, it doesn't matter in the least because they are aliens. Just like Clark Kent looked explicitly Caucasian, but couldn't reconcile himself with being human. Race doesn't matter to them. Although, I will say the portrayal of blacks in DBZ is pretty racist...the big ridiculous looking pink lips, I don't mind the skin, but their behaviors were also ridiculous and unbelievably stereotypical...Killa spoke slang so ridiculous he was virtually incoherent, and I remember in the junior division there was this tall, lanky black character wearing boxing gloves and bobbing around and dancing like a fool, and also talking like an idiot. It's strange to me because so many black people loved DBZ and it's best to make your series more inclusive to draw in a larger fan base, luckily Tite Kubo and Masashi Kishimoto didn't make the same mistake.

I do think that mangaka should start drawing their characters to look more distinctly Asian, not just where people guess that a character with a Japanese name, black hair, and eyes that aren't ridiculously huge is Asian, but I mean a character with the eye folds too even though it isn't traditional anime style...at the same time there really wouldn't be a point. Asians already support manga more than any other group, and get the benefits of direct interviews and contact with the authors, better quality episodes, and earlier releases while people like me in America fiend for english subbed movies a year after their release.

Goku is not Asian[]

Goku is Not Asian If he was he would be drawn like this [1] but he's not goku is a saiyan which means he's not from Asia nor does he have any Asian heritage he isn't even drawn to resemble Asians there are a few actual Asian characters in this series that I will use as examples Krillin,Grandpa Gohan,& all perfect examples of how akira would draw an asian man no whites in their eyes showing they have a squint and small round noses and a pale yellowish skin . Many people like to argue be ause he was made by an Asia. He should be Asian but there are black people in dbz too they aren't Asian 17-18 aren't Asian bulmaZanga isn't Asian so why must everyone think saiyans are Asian ?!?!?

Read And Learn..[]

Wow.. please let this end this whole thing.

Let me start by saying i LOVE DBZ still watch every ep. to this day exactly. which is why im writing.

Goku and the saiyans are obviously WHITE.. "aliens" or not i mean cmon seriously? look at him.. ur not dumb, dont be naive.

And yea its pretty messed up.

It wouldnt be that bad if Akira hadnt added insult to injury and give EVERY black guy in dragonball a face that makes him look like hes from a frikking 1920s blackface minstrelsy (googleit). Am i the only one who notices mr popo? Idk what toryamas deal is but some black dude mustve fucked him over cause hes got a serious beef.

Now you can try to clean it up in dbz and say gokus an "alien" but we still know the deal..

Even on his newest shit the main enemy gokus fighting looks like an egyptian cat or somethin. You should know sciences are starting to put egypt as the ones who taught modern meds and religion. Now all u see is movies saying aliens built egypt and egypts evil etc..  Im sure Akira T. knows this and is thinking let me poo on these people a little more.

Theres a lot of symbolism in dbz that not a lot of people pay attention to. regardless of aliens or not the messages are clear!

This is like an actual ignorance overload. The Saiyans are Saiyans, not Caucasians. All anime characters without a skin tone look white, even if they're stated as a certain race; that's just the style. Large lips on African characters is also the style. It isn't right, but it's been a trend up until the last 10-15 years. Popo is Indian, not African. Bills is not evil, nor is he Egyptian. He is similar in appearance to Bastet, but that's not saying anything negative about any group of people. In conclusion, you have no idea what you're talking about and should probably go take a high school writing class. --DARK 11:20, May 11, 2013 (UTC)

He's not even human[]

He's an alien how could he be Asian? He just happened to land in japan. The namekians, saiyans, kais, etc. are not Asian because they're not even human. Most of the main characters that are human are Asian like krillin, yamcha and tien. Gohan, goten and trunks are half Asian because their moms. I'm not sure about bulma being Asian though because her and her family are so different from chi chi. Hercule doesn't seem Asian to me either--Ssj3gogeta96 (talk) 14:42, May 11, 2013 (UTC)ssj3gogeta96

Goku didn't land in Japan, dude. He landed near Mount Paozu. The 'japan' in the Dragon World, is Gengoro Island (Yeah, the one from Dr. Slump).

I never knew that. That's cool to know thanks--Ssj3gogeta96 (talk) 01:36, May 12, 2013 (UTC)ssj3gogeta96

thats ok. The countries are not the same in the Dragon World. (they even have one king to rule the entire world)

Sandubadear (talk) 19:56, May 12, 2013 (UTC)

But the humans such as krillin, yamcha, and bulma are Asian though right? Because some of humans in dragonball were drawn as if they were African American or Native American. Or is it just impossible to say what they are since they aren't real countries?--Ssj3gogeta96 (talk) 20:17, May 12, 2013 (UTC)ssj3gogeta96

The humans are the same, but the countries aren't. (I know it doesn't make sense)

Sandubadear (talk) 22:08, May 12, 2013 (UTC)

IF YOU TAKE A LOOK AT THIS EPISODE, I'M PRETTY SURE THIS IS TYPICAL MEXICAN SMALL TOWN, THE WAYS, THE WAY PEOPLE LOOK AND BEHAVE, AND THE WAY THE HOUSES LOOK, ADOBE BRICK

Screen Shot 2014-11-29 at 12.55

Mexican barroquial style house.

HOUSES!!  SO THERE IS "HISPANIC PEOPLE" IN THIS SHOW IN MY OPINION....Hispanic means Spanish.

Forgot to mention that mexican also has cactooses and spanish signs
