All right, I am a purist of the original dub of Dragonball Z. But this wiki seems under two impressions. 1.) The redub is the main DBZ to go by as main canon, with original dub as some sort of "spinoff". 2.) The original dub is only the first 53 episodes (which were dubbed in Ocean).
I'd like to clear up a few things on both counts.
First, you treat the redub as main DBZ because it is the uncut episodes, the closest English version to the original Japanese episodes, which came first. Well, here's a news flash. Although the Japanese episodes came before the original dub, the original dub came before the redub. It was the first English dub, and therefore the "original series" to English-speaking countries, so it should be the main canon, with the redub as a reboot just like Dragonball Kai. Just like the Dark Knight Trilogy is to Tim Burton's Batman, and Disney's Narnia series to the BBC Narnia series. Although they tell the same story, treat them as two parallel universes. (similar to Fullmetal Alchemist and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood)
Second, the original dub included the FUNimation episodes 54-276, and I think I'll explain this a bit.
Dragonball, the movie Dead Zone, and Dragonball Z episodes 1-53 were dubbed in Ocean and aired on TV. I don't know why but DBZ was cancelled after that, but when interest was re-sparked, FUNimation continued the series, dubbing it with their own voices as they couldn't afford to use Saban. This was still part of the original dub, even though it was in FUNimation. It was the one that aired on TV as the direct continuation of the first 53 Ocean episodes. Episodes 54-276 of the original dub used an awesome soundtrack by Bruce Faulconer and remained consistent with the original dub, beyond no longer being afraid to use words like "kill" or "dead". Also Christopher Sabat did voices of Vegeta and Zarbon that were accurate to Brian Drummond and Paul Dobson (even if Vegeta's voice was a bit lower he still sounded like Vegeta).
However, sometime after, FUNimation redubbed Episodes 1-53 as the uncut 68 episodes. Actually, no. It was 67 episodes, and I'll get to that later. Instead of Bruce Faulconer, they used a dull soundtrack which apparently was the original Japanese version. And after that, for their box sets, they continued to redub Episodes 54-276 - now 68-291. Correct me if I'm wrong but did they not change some dialog, voices, and soundtrack from the original FUNimation episodes? (I remember seeing a clip of the redub during the Captain Ginyu or Frieza Saga where Vegeta says "If I lose the dragonballs I'm gonna be totally p*ssed", which of course wasn't in the original dub.
And of course, let's not forget the one FUNimation episode of original dub that extended into two in the uncut. Gohan Attacks. In the original dub, Fighting Power: One Million ends with Frieza impaling Krillin with his horn and throwing him into the lake. Then Gohan beats up Frieza. Continue to Gohan Attacks, where Gohan finishes his attack. Frieza survives and beats him up a bit. Then Krillin cuts off Frieza's tail and distracts him long enough for Dende to heal Gohan. Episode ends where Piccolo arrives.
In the uncut, Frieza stabbing Krillin is longer and more graphic. So long that Fighting Power: One Million ends with Frieza's horn still embedded in Krillin. (which was trimmed in the edited version due to violence) Continue to Gohan Attacks, where Frieza throws Krillin away. Then Gohan beats him up. Then Frieza beats up Gohan in an extended scene (you know what I mean) and the episode ends with him stomping on his head. Then continue to Piccolo the Super Namek where Frieza continues stepping on Gohan's head. Then Krillin cuts off his tail, Piccolo arrives at the end, etc.
And, as mentioned above, they changed a few of the voices up too, particularly Vegeta and Zarbon. Vegeta's voice is as deep as Piccolo's and sounds like Christopher Sabat had to strain his voice really hard. While Zarbon sounds more like King Cold, as opposed to his usual Australian accent. Thank goodness Jeice remained the same but still. And these new voices carry over to the games and films (although atleast they have good soundtracks). I also heard they changed the voice of Frieza's third form to that of his second form in response to complaints about his voice sounding feminine (yet in the games they made all his forms sound like his first form, which has the feminine voice). And they changed 19's voice to sound more mechanical.
So... yeah. I'd say the redub, as released on DVD, and FUNimation episodes of original dub, as aired on TV, are quite different.
If we're not going to by original dub as better than redub, can't they at least be treated as equal? Two parallel universes? That's what Fullmetal Alchemist Wiki does.
(Another anime that's complicated when it comes to the dubs and voices is Winx Club, a magical girl anime that's like a cross between Sailor Moon and Harry Potter. It has three different English dubs:
- RAI English - Includes Seasons 1-4. Bloom comes from the planet Domino, and Layla from the planet Tides. Season 3 villain is named Valtor, and Bloom kills him by extinguishing his flame with fairy dust.
- 4Kids - Includes Seasons 1-3. Bloom's planet is Sparks, and Layla's planet is Tides. Season 2 villain Darkar was once a man named Argulus until he fused with Shadow Fire, and has no connection to the Ancient Witches. Valtor is named Baltor, and Bloom kills him by using her own dragon fire to extinguish his. The fairy hunters, Roxy, and Nebula do not exist as there is no Season 4.
- Nickelodeon - Includes Seasons 3 and above (I think there's a 5 and 6). I don't know if Seasons 1-2 events are referenced but there is no Nickelodeon version of those two seasons. Layla's name is Aisha.
So which is to be treated as "main canon?" All of them. They're all different versions of the same show even if they tell the same story. They're all parallel universes. (my brother told me that when I wondered whether to go by RAI or 4Kids, I chose RAI coz it's easier to find now and includes the wizards of the black circle)
See what I'm saying here? The redub doesn't have to be better than the original dub. They're two different versions of the same show. Even though one of them came first and the other is like a reboot, just like Dragonball Kai. To be straight forward with this. I think you're too attach to that old dub and don't really care about what Dragon Ball really is versus what it isn't. I will openly admit that there are a lot of things from the old dub that I have a sentimental attachment to such as the alternative Faulconer score and some of the dialog that never leaves me. It was a good time in my life. However I do not let this nostalgia blind me from the truth. It is a bastardized dub plain and simple. It is incorrect with its rewrites in the script. The writers took so many liberties as to which they decided to add story elements that didn't really exist even to the point of not doing any research ahead of time to find out there tweaks would cause plot holes and inconsistency (I.e. Dr. Gero being the leader of the Red Ribbon Army, Burdock being a brilliant scientist or Ascended Saiyan which is a made up term.) It changed the names of characters, it changed the spelling of names that they kept at least the pronunciation correct, it changed the name of techniques and it rewrote who characters even are for that matter (biggest example is Freeza.) Much like the old Yu-Gi-Oh! dub I liked it when I was a kid. But as I learned what I watch was mostly a lie and not what it really is I decided to seek the truth. There is no Tristian there is Honda, there is no Tea there is Anzu and there is no Maxamillion Pegasus there is Pegasus J. Crawford. Mind you I'm not a Japanese weaboo by any means. I just want what it really is. With the redub they fixed many of the lies that were fed to us and with Kai they managed to fix all of them completely (minus name changes. I never saw most of those getting fixed.) With the current dub and especially Kai the English speaking fan base finally has a chance to know what Dragon Ball really is and can now communicate with a purist fan without any problems. The old dub as I see it is faux Dragon Ball Z. There is a clear difference between Dragon Ball Z and DRAGONNN BAAALLL ZEEEE!!! (In epic voice). I think if you are a purist fan of Dragon Ball then you should be willing to accept that that dub was an accident, has been fixed for the most part and should be forgotten. It is something we look back and laugh at. I continue to blow fans minds in person with what was changed back in the day. To the point where they question what they like.
I know this may have come of as a bit offensive or attacking, but I stand by what I said. I (and think most) laugh at that old stuff and stick with the truth. If you want to stick purely to that old dub then I suggest finding a place that uses it exclusively wherever that may be.
