"I doubt I need an introduction, but just in case, I am the mighty Frieza, and yes, all the horrible stories you've heard are true."
— Frieza, in "Namek's Defense"

Frieza (フリーザ, Furīza) was the prince and the emperor of the universe, who controlled his own imperial army and was feared for his ruthlessness and power. He was the descendant of Chilled, the second son of King Cold, the younger brother of Cooler, and the father of Kuriza.

Appearance

Frieza in his first form

According to Akira Toriyama, Frieza's design is an amalgamation of what he thought monsters looked like in his childhood. According to the Daizenshuu, Frieza was also inspired by Toriyama's second editor, Yū Kondō. According to Daizenshuu 2, Toriyama was also inspired to create Frieza due to the events of the Japanese economic bubble that had occurred at the time he was writing the Saiyan Saga, with Frieza specifically being based on real estate speculators, which Toriyama claimed were "the worst sort of people."[1]

Frieza is one of the villains in the series who possesses an entire range of transformations, each one being quite different than the others. It is implied by Vegeta and Frieza himself in the series that Frieza's fourth, most powerful form is actually his original form, with the other three being forms that suppress and conserve his enormous power. Frieza later confirms this while fighting the main protagonist, Goku. His forms seem to revolve around both western and Japanese concepts of demons. According to an interview done by Shonen Jump with Toriyama, Frieza's final form was purposefully made to look small and less menacing: Toriyama wanted to go against the expectation that villains and monsters become bigger and meaner looking the stronger they are.

In his first form, Frieza usually wears battle armor with a purple chest plate. When in his true natural form and also his golden form, Frieza wears his race's ultimate Bio Suit, the Z Fighting Suit. When in his Mecha form his body is equipped with a permanent Cosmic Suit.

Personality

"Oh, to see the Dragon Balls turn to stone at the very moment your wish might have come true. Quite a pill to swallow, ay Vegeta? Of course, even more so for myself. As a matter of fact, in all my years, I have never been so angry as I am now. How incredibly irritating not to have seen the writing on the wall. NOW YOU PAY!!! YOU VILE FILTH SUCKING MAGGOTS!! YOU WILL RUE THE DAY YOU CROSSED MY PATH!! PREPARE YOURSELF TO EMBRACE OBLIVION!!!!"
— Frieza to Vegeta, Gohan, Krillin, and Dende in "Frieza Closes In! Mighty Porunga, Grant Our Wish!"

Frieza loses his composure over the loss of his chance for immortality

At his core, Frieza relishes death and destruction, as he shows in his enjoyment of Planet Vegeta's annihilation, as well as his maniacal glee when twice attempting to blow up Planet Namek. He is noted as being one of the most sadistic characters in the series, and often tries to make his enemies suffer before he kills them. Like most other villains in Dragon Ball Z, Frieza has an ego to match his power. He also has a sardonic wit and explains in "Face Off on Namek" that the three things he refuses to tolerate are cowardice, bad haircuts and military insurrection, and subsequently declares that Vegeta possesses all three of these qualities. He utilizes dark humor at times, such as saying "Long live the King!" shortly after killing King Vegeta, as well as singing "Pop goes the weasel!" after violently murdering Krillin (both are mentioned in the FUNimation dub only). Frieza is fully aware of his reputation for brutality, and makes no effort to deny it, as evidenced by his introduction to the Namekians. Despite his cold-heartedness and numerous observations by other characters that he cares about no one but himself, Frieza does make several displays of respect towards his father, King Cold. It is stated in a Budokai Tenkaichi 3 biography that Cold is in fact stronger than Frieza (though Toriyama stated that Frieza was always in a league all his own). His mention of his parents being able to cause pain to his true form, as well as Piccolo's statement of a stronger power being with Frieza during his arrival to Earth before Future Trunks' appearance, implies that this may be the case in the main series as well. However, this respect is not absolute, as even after King Cold is introduced, Frieza continues to dub himself the most powerful being of his time, despite his own admission that his father was able to cause him pain in his final form.

FriezaFinalFormVsVegeta

Frieza mercilessly beats Vegeta

In a narrative sense, Frieza serves as a counter to the easy going, peaceful personality of Goku. He tends to react to any given situation quite evenly, and is only really driven over the edge once his full power starts to slip away and Super Saiyan Goku takes the upper hand in the final moments of their battle on Namek. Frieza is quite confident in his abilities, and often takes the opportunity to flaunt them (e.g. not using his limbs in some fights).

For all of Frieza's power and arrogance, he is not so overconfident as to totally disregard potential threats to his rule, and sometimes displays what may be considered a paranoid attitude. He destroyed Planet Vegeta simply because of his nagging fear of the legend of the Super Saiyan, as well as the fear of a possible mass Saiyan revolt (though Whis claims Beerus was the one who authorized Planet Vegeta's destruction, however it is likely that Frieza's own reasons were the driving force and Beerus' authorization allowed Frieza to effectively kill two birds with one stone, by destroying Planet Vegeta he could avoid both a potential Saiyan uprising and at the same time avoid upsetting Beerus by carrying out his wishes and remain in the Destroyer's good graces for the time being).

Frieza preparing to destroy Planet Vegeta (Episode of Bardock)

Frieza is rather narcissistic and reacts violently to criticism. Unlike most other primary antagonists, he actually displays a very calm, civilized and refined demeanor, using very polite, regal, eloquent language rather than the more tough-talking style of most of the other villains. Despite these traits, he is quite cold-hearted, almost to the point of being machine-like in nature. He tends to view most problems and situations in an intellectual manner, like an academic or a professor, rather than as a manner of life or death (largely because his immense power causes him to believe he can easily defeat anyone the old fashioned way if he chooses to). Despite being very clever and intelligent Frieza's sheer power leads him to believe no force in the universe could challenge his authority since he extinguished Planet Vegeta, he typically underestimates his foes, resulting in his eventual downfall.

Frieza ensuring his revenge on Goku

Following his crushing defeat on Namek, Frieza became obsessed with taking his revenge on Goku and his friends, as he headed to Earth as soon as he received the cybernetic modifications and becoming Mecha Frieza, believing the might his new cybernetic form was enough to challenge even a Super Saiyan. However he suffered another humiliating defeat at the hands of Future Trunks' Super Saiyan form which resulted in his death. Upon being revived by Sorbet and Tagoma's wish to Shenron, Frieza was determined to resume his quest for revenge and killed Tagoma when he suggested otherwise. However upon learning that Goku and the Z-Fighters had become much stronger in the years following his death, he decided to train himself to become stronger, believing that as a prodigy among his family he could reach even greater levels of power, resulting in him obtaining mastery over his 100% Final Form and unlocking his Ultimate Evolution. However Frieza's overconfidence over the power of his new form and his desire for revenge, led him to immediately travel to Earth with an army of 1000 soldiers instead of training further to master this new form as well. Frieza's haste and inexperience with the form proved to be his downfall as his stamina and power decreased the more he used it, which interestingly was the same problem he had when he used his 100% Final Form during the Battle on Planet Namek. Interestingly this trait of Frieza's is in sharp contrast with his nemesis Goku, who is usually focused on mastering or reducing the strain of his transformations such as the Super Saiyan form and other techniques (like the Kaio-ken), allowing him to use those forms and techniques longer by using his energy and stamina more efficiently instead of relying on its power alone to defeat his enemies quickly as Frieza is often inclined. This habit is the result of Frieza having never encountered anyone strong enough to perceive as a threat to his rule, before he encountered Goku, thus he never really learned how to properly prepare himself to confront beings stronger than himself, unlike Goku who has fought several opponents stronger than himself. Since this has led to his defeat twice, it shows Frieza's arrogance prevents him from learning from his past errors and is ultimately what prevents him from reaching his true potential. This overconfidence also leads to him not engaging in regular training which explains why he couldn't control his power.

Following his death at the hands of Future Trunks, Frieza found himself in Earth's Hell, wrapped up in a cocoon hanging from a tree surrounded by flowers, guarded by the Angels of Hell, and forced to watch as stuffed animals, fairies, and angels joyfully and cheerfully danced and paraded while playing music. While most would find his punishment there rather benign and even somewhat pleasant, not to mention highly comical, for an eternal punishment in Hell, to Frieza it was absolute torture and ultimately turned out to be a fitting eternal punishment for the evil tyrant. After being revived, Frieza admitted to Goku that he completely loathed his time in Earth's Hell. As a result, this was one of the driving forces behind his revenge on the surviving Saiyans (as Super Saiyan Trunks was responsible for sending him there in the first place) and he revealed to Sorbet that after taking his revenge he decided he would destroy Earth believing that doing so would also eliminate Earth's Hell along with it. Frieza also revealed that he found Goku's pure and noble character nauseating, to the point it made him want to vomit. Given Frieza's sadistic love of death and destruction, his aversion to all things pure and good is quite fitting and shows that deep down Frieza embraces his pure evil nature and despises all things that are purely good.

After his revival, Frieza is determined to take his revenge on Goku and though confident in the might of his new evolution, Golden Frieza, Frieza decided not to take any chances and developed a contingency plan with Sorbet to take advantage of Goku's tendency to let his guard down when he had the upper hand. Ultimately, Frieza was forced to resort to it when his new form's weakness began to take effect and gave Sorbet the signal to shoot Goku with his Bad Ring Laser while Goku's guard was down. This shows that Frieza had lost a large sense of honor he may have had before his death (which he showed when he remained behind on the dying Planet Namek to kill Goku personally instead of simply letting the planet's explosion take Goku's life), as he was willing to having one of his underlings underhandedly weaken Goku allowing Frieza to easily dominate his weakened opponent, most likely due to his desire to do anything to beat Goku. Despite having the upper hand, instead of finishing Goku off himself, Frieza decided to test Vegeta's loyalty by having him kill Goku.

However Frieza underestimated the deep-seeded hatred Vegeta held for him due to his role in the destruction of Planet Vegeta and the Genocide of the Saiyans, as he offered to make Vegeta Supreme Commander of the Frieza Force in exchange for Vegeta killing the wounded Goku and was surprised when Vegeta rejected his offer. He also mistook Vegeta's early attack on Goku as a sign of loyalty, not realizing Vegeta was just angry over Goku breaking their promise that they would take turns fighting Frieza. However this was partly due to the fact that Frieza was unaware that Vegeta had obtained the same level of power as Goku and mistakenly believed that Vegeta was no threat to him.

Due to his actions and prominence throughout the universe, his infamy sets the standard for members of his race, with characters often initially mistaking other members of his race to be him (like Chilled, Cooler, Frost, and Froze). His influence on the seventh universe's view of his race is noted in Xenoverse, where a heroic member of his race named Reso notes that his race being evil was a misconception, and only the likes of Frieza and Cold were truly pure evil.

Frieza has been shown to have a strong influence over people, though in a manner quite unlike Goku, he possess a corrupting influence that can cause some people that he exerts his will over for a long period of time to become much different from before, and more like him. The two most notable examples of this corruption being Vegeta and Tagoma, who both became completely different from how they previously acted due to Frieza. Despite his evil nature, Frieza can also be quite charismatic towards people who he does not treat badly, as the Ginyu Force all worship Frieza and have extreme loyalty towards him.

Frieza's power over the saiyans

Frieza is introduced in the series as an extremely powerful galactic overlord who oversees the Frieza Force, of which the Saiyans, the main antagonists prior, were members. He rules a vast empire that has control over what has been said to be at least 79 planets up until his death according to the original manga, and later in Resurrection ‘F’ it is mentioned that he has at least 448 planets. The manga and anime never specify exactly how large of a region Frieza oversees, only implying that he controlled at least 448 planets. His brother Cooler states that Frieza ruled the northern quadrant of the universe in the movie Dragon Ball Z: Cooler's Revenge. Frieza creates many armies from the planets that he conquers, and his most utilized race were the Saiyans. Frieza had heard about the legend of the Super Saiyan, a being with unrivaled power and the only warrior that could pose a threat to him, but dismissed it as nothing more than a myth; however, after several Saiyans emerged with rapidly evolving potential, Frieza began to fear that the legend of the Super Saiyan may one day come true. Thus, when confronted by Bardock, a Saiyan whose power was growing, Frieza wiped out almost the entirety of the Saiyan race by annihilating Planet Vegeta, the Saiyan home world. Frieza's actions eventually lead him into conflict with the heroes of the series when he tries to take possession of the wish-granting Dragon Balls on Planet Namek. Still, no one could possibly contend with Frieza's might—that is, until his fears were realized when he inadvertently caused the emergence of the mythical Super Saiyan, Goku, and was defeated by him in a terrific, planet-shattering battle.

Background

Frieza's father is a mutant with an abnormally high power level. Because of this, Frieza also possesses the mutants traits, making him, his father, King Cold, and his brother, Cooler the only ones among Frieza's race who possess the striking level of power and cruelty shown in the series.[2] However, even among his family and the rest of his race, Frieza was a prodigy, whose natural growth in power required him to never undergo any real training and still ultimately became recognized as the most powerful warrior in the universe.[3] Frieza used to fight with his parents, and it had not been since these fights that he had ever had to dust himself off after a fight. At some point in Frieza's past, he conquered at least 448 planets, and built an elite force of soldiers named the Ginyu Force. Frieza annexed the Saiyans into his Galactic Frieza Army, and heard of the legends of the Super Saiyan and the Super Saiyan God. At one point, King Cold told Frieza that there were only two entities in the universe who Frieza should never cross: Majin Buu and Beerus the Destroyer.[3]

At some point in time Frieza met Beerus himself. The two got along fairly well as they both enjoyed destroying things. However one time Frieza got carried away and caused Beerus to get angry, Beerus fought Frieza and easily defeated the tyrant.[4] Beerus also ordered him to destroy Planet Vegeta. Unbeknownst to Frieza, his arrogant attitude annoyed Beerus, who was more humble. He thought about destroying Frieza once he saved Beerus the trouble of destroying Planet Vegeta himself. At some point, Frieza encountered the Galactic Patrol and when they engaged him in combat he easily defeated them, thus the patrol decided that they should avoid Frieza at all costs.[4]

Frieza did charities along with being an emperor but he didn't tell anyone because he is too proud.[5]

"I say we torch the whole barrel of monkeys."
— Frieza to Zarbon about exterminating the Saiyan race after King Vegeta's rebellion.

Frieza&Soldiers(DBM)

Frieza plans the destruction of the Saiyans

Frieza had many races under his thumb in his planetary trade, but none were as significant as the Saiyans. Gifted with natural fighting ability, strength and the ability to become stronger after every battle, Saiyans became powerful weapons in Frieza's subjugation of planets, though Frieza noted they were never entirely loyal to him due to their pride. However, these very abilities made them a liability to the paranoid Frieza, afraid that, if left unchecked, the Saiyans could either unite and overwhelm him, or one day provide a warrior to rival Frieza himself - such as a Super Saiyan or a Super Saiyan God. Due to this, and also due to a past meeting with the God of Destruction Beerus, who asked him to wipe out the Saiyans for him, he decided to wipe out the planet and its inhabitants despite his attendant saying that it would be a shame to waste such powerful warriors. He also ended up forcing King Vegeta into giving him his son, Vegeta, as part of their continued "cooperation", although King Vegeta secretly intended to betray Frieza before he could ever let him have his son. Frieza then searched for a time where almost all of the Saiyans would be on Planet Vegeta, so that he could wipe all of them out at once. His attendant tells him that almost all of the Saiyans would be on the Planet in one month's time, and so Frieza decides to blow it up then.

FriezaWithDodoriaAndZarbon

Frieza is informed by Zarbon and Dodoria about the Saiyans' growing power

Hearing the accomplishments of the low-level Saiyan Bardock and acting on his own fears of the Super Saiyan legends (including that of the Super Saiyan God), Frieza resolves to eliminate all possible threats. Zarbon suggests that he wipe out the Saiyans. He sends his henchman Dodoria and his elites to assassinate Bardock and his team, while Frieza himself sets a course to Planet Vegeta. On his arrival, King Vegeta and his men attempt an uprising both to end Frieza's reign and to rescue Prince Vegeta, but it ended disastrously with the King and his soldiers being slaughtered by Frieza as Zarbon and Dodoria watch.

As Frieza arrived in the planet's orbit, he suspected that other Saiyans would attempt to emulate King Vegeta's approach and commit a full-scale uprising, a suspicion confirmed when he was confronted by a charging Bardock, lunging through the fields of Frieza's men in defiance of the tyrant, and even goes as far as to fire a Final Spirit Cannon at him after giving a heart-felt speech declaring that the Saiyan race is done working for Frieza. The tyrant retaliated by laughing maniacally with glee as he prepared a Supernova to annihilate the planet. The attack consumes Bardock and some of his men as it buries itself deep beneath the planet's surface resulting in a massive explosion, eradicating nearly every Saiyan.

Frieza relishing the destruction of Planet Vegeta

"Well Well!! Now that, is beautiful!! See?! Look Dodoria, Zarbon, look at the fireworks!! Aren't they splendid?!?!"
— Frieza relishing the destruction of Planet Vegeta

After the planet's explosion, a story was fabricated to ensure the loyalty of the few remaining Saiyans Frieza had kept in his employ as a convenience: Vegeta, Raditz and Nappa. According to the story, a large meteor struck Planet Vegeta and destroyed it that very day. Another version of the story is that it was the benevolent guardian of Planet Vegeta, ashamed at the immorality of the Saiyans, who summoned meteors to impact and destroy the planet and the Saiyan race. Despite these stories, Frieza's destruction of the Saiyans is a rumor that Vegeta heard before the events of Dragon Ball Z, as shown in a flashback during the Frieza Saga (although this might be a form of retroactive continuity, as Vegeta seemed to be unaware of this until Dodoria's confession before his death).

At one point, Frieza destroyed an entire planet and the rebellious race who lived on it with a single gigantic energy ball that he fired from his index finger. Vegeta witnessed this event, which caused him to become scared of Frieza's power and put his plans to assassinate Frieza on a hiatus.[6] At one point prior to the battle on Namek, Frieza witnessed a conflict between Vegeta and the Ginyu Force member Guldo unfolding and blasted Guldo away with a weak energy wave as he wished to speak with Vegeta. Frieza then ordered Vegeta to come with him to conquer a planet that Frieza had taken a liking too.

Jaco the Galactic Patrolman

Frieza calls for the Saiyans to return to Planet Vegeta. On his ship, he is told of the Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan God legends by his subordinate but his subordinate doesn't think the legends could be true. Frieza, however, doesn't think they should be overlooked, so he plans to destroy Planet Vegeta in one month's time since most of the Saiyan's will not arrive until then. He then tells his subordinate to tell the remaining Saiyans that the planet has been destroyed by a meteor so the Saiyans won't suspect him.

"I desire but one tiny little wish, for the one thing I don't already have: the power of Eternal Life."
— Frieza to Moori, on Namek.

Twenty-five years later, Frieza spies on Vegeta's scouter during the Saiyan Saga and in doing so, learns of the existence of the Dragon Balls on Namek. Planning to obtain them and make a wish for immortality, Frieza arrives on Namek with his longtime comrades and top two highest ranking henchmen, Zarbon and Dodoria, in order to try and obtain the Dragon Balls from the Namekians. After Cui, Dodoria, and Zarbon fall to Vegeta, who had betrayed Frieza to collect the fabled items for his own ends, the Ginyu Force is summoned by Frieza to retrieve the Dragon Balls and neutralize the Saiyan rogue so that he can be brought to him. Ultimately, they fail to do so when Goku arrives on Planet Namek and fights them, eventually defeating them.

Ginyu did bring Frieza the Dragon Balls while his comrades fought, with Frieza complimenting Ginyu on his job well done, and saying how he should have sent for them much earlier. Ginyu then attempts to commemorate the event by performing a dance, but Frieza tells him to do it another time. Frieda then attempts to summon Porunga, but had no success, coming to the conclusion that they needed some special password only a Namekian would know. While searching for the secret to unlock the power of the Dragon Balls, Frieza finds out that three Namekians are still alive by checking his scouters. Ginny then offers to go, but Frieza tells him he will go himself, telling Ginyu to stay at his post, then he speeds towards Nail and Guru, passing by Dende at the same time, yet ignoring his presence, finally arriving at Grand Elder Guru's home where he is confronted by Nail, the strongest of the Namekian warriors on the planet. Nail leads Frieza away from Guru, and fights Frieza.

— Frieza, in "Nail, Champion of Namek"

As the battle commences, Nail attempts to fight and lunges for his neck, but to no avail, as Frieza grabs onto Nails arm and violently rips it off his body. As Nail screams in pain, he quickly regenerates his arm, much to the surprise of Frieza. After a very long and tortuous battle, Frieza insists that Nail tells him how to summon Poring, but Nail simply launches a powerful ki attack, to no success. Frieda then lands a blow to Nail's nose, while Frieza still demands Nail he tell him about the password. Nail beings laughing, telling Frieza his big mistake about letting Dende go and leaving the dragon balls. Frieza then leaves him to die after discovering the fight was a diversion for Dende to reveal the password to Krillin and Gohan as they take the Dragon Balls.

While flying towards his ship, he attempts to find the energy of the Ginyu Force, realizing they are not showing up on the scouter. Enraged, he follows in pursuit of the heroes only to find that Porunga, the Namekian Dragon is gone due to Guru's death. He confronts Vegeta, Krillin, Gohan, and Dende after Guru had passed away. He then loses his composure due to the loss of immortality and becomes even more enraged to the fact that he did not see this coming earlier. He then faces off with a much more powerful Vegeta, who is now capable of possibly holding his own for a bit against Frieza's strength.

Spurred on by Vegeta, Frieza unveils his second form, to the complete shock of Gohan, Krillin, Vegeta, Dende, as the power not only increasing frightens them, but his appearance as well. With this newfound power, this allows him to defeat Vegeta. After Frieza uses the Death Storm attack, he takes his time to decide who should die first, and chooses Krillin. He injures Krillin by impaling him through the chest with his left horn and torturing him. He then throws him into the Namekian sea, taunting Gohan with his friend's limp body. Gohan responds in an incredible fury and proceeds to pound Frieza with punches, kicks and a barrage of ki blasts. Frieza then proceeds to pummel him as a response, and just before he can finish him off, Krillin, healed by Dende, shoots a Destructo Disc at his tail, chopping the tip of it off. Frieza chases Krillin in a diversion and returns to the others when Frieza decides to finish them off. Fortunately, Piccolo joins the battle and is able to go blow to blow with Frieza thanks to his fusion with Nail. Frieza and Piccolo are at even power, neither one of them being able to gain a significant upper hand. Piccolo then powers up further, but soon confused and shocked when he sees that Frieza is able to surpass his new speed.

As the fight continues, Piccolo is revealed to be holding back because of his weighted clothing. Eager to demonstrate even more of his power to Piccolo, Frieza once again transforms, unlocking more of his seemingly endless power. Piccolo attempts to hold his own, but to no avail. He now tries to outrun Frieza, but Frieza's speed is simply too much for Piccolo. Frieza then brutally attacks Piccolo with his Crazy Finger Beam. Gohan again gets angry, and fires the Full Power Masenko, which Frieza struggles with, but eventually deflects back with ease . Piccolo protects Gohan by firing a blast at it, deflecting it away. Frieza notes Gohan's growing power, and notices he is a Saiyan, but doubts Vegeta is his father (he still believes that only Raditz, Nappa, and Vegeta escaped Planet Vegeta's destruction), and finally he unveils his true form, stressing that he intended to give his foes the "pleasure" of observing it before they died; in the anime, he promises to show them "a terror greater than hell."

Frieza in his third form prepares his final transformation

"It would be a relatively simple matter to obliterate you all in my current form, but rather than do that, it will be far more satisfying to leave you with one final vision more terrifying than Death! Consider this my parting gift to you! A nightmare beyond even the horrors of hell! Witness my true, ultimate form!"
— Frieza, in "Frieza's Final Transformation! The Ultimate Nightmare Begins!"

In his new form, Frieza first killed Dende, who Frieza had found out had been healing the heroes when he saw Dende healing Piccolo just before transforming into his final form. Piccolo, Krillin and Gohan attack Frieza, but Frieza easily dodges their flurry of kicks and punches. After receiving another Zenkai at his request, Vegeta announced himself as a Super Saiyan and fought Frieza, attempting to hit Frieza with an intense flurry of punches, however, Frieza's speed is still far too much for Vegeta to handle, leaving Vegeta in a quiet state of fear. With all his power, Vegeta fires a Final Burst Cannon at Frieza directly, but the tyrant was still far his superior and easily kicked the beam away. After Vegeta lost his hope, Frieza proceeds to torture and punish him. Frieza wraps his tail around Vegeta's neck, lifts him up and begins torturing him by repeatedly punching Vegeta's spine while strangling him with his tail. As Piccolo, Krillin and Gohan watch in horror, Frieza sadistically reminds them that they can assist Vegeta if they want to. Just as Frieza is about to slay Vegeta, the healed Goku arrives on the battlefield, ready to fight Frieza. Vegeta, believing that Goku had finally become a full-fledged Super Saiyan, taunts Frieza, even though he is too badly beaten to even stand. Frieza, proud of his past accomplishments, smirks before sending his Death Beam through the Saiyan Prince's heart. Teetering on the brink of death, Vegeta is able to tell the newly healed Goku of Frieza's genocide of the Saiyan race, imploring him to take revenge on behalf for all Saiyans.

As Vegeta finishes his plea to Goku, he finally dies from his injury. Goku, saddened by Vegeta's death, buries him and vows to finish Frieza. Goku and Frieza then spar, with Frieza realizing that his opponent is the son of the Saiyan that gave him such trouble years before. Goku and Frieza are an even match for a while (with the latter even admitting that Goku is the first person other than his parents to cause him pain in his true form), until Frieza determines and states that with 50%, he could easily defeat Goku, with Goku believing this is a bluff. Frieza then increases his power to 50% of his maximum, and easily beats Goku, with Goku completely unable to keep up. Goku attempts to use his Kaio-ken x10 during this battle, but Frieza stills beats him using half of his maximum power. Goku then goes desperate and attempts to use a Kaio-ken x20 and a Kamehameha attack, but to no significant avail (the best he could do was slightly char Frieza's hands), as Frieza easily diffuses the blast with 50% of his power. However, he does become alarmingly aware of his opponent's remarkable abilities.

— "Goku's Final Attack! Countdown to Planet Namek's Destruction!"

It should be noted that in the English dub, Frieza states that he had only been fighting at 1% of his full power. Also, no reference is made in this dub to Frieza not using even a third of his power while battling Goku with x10 Kaio-ken. After taking another beating, a severely battered Goku attempts to create a large Spirit Bomb by calling on the energies of Namek's solar system as a final resort, as Namek did not have enough life on the planet to make the Spirit Bomb powerful. Piccolo is able to distract the tyrant long enough, kicking him into the ocean, and Goku is eventually able to heavily wound Frieza using the large Spirit Bomb.

With everyone believing the warlord to be dead, the heroes take the time to relax, until Krillin noticed that Frieza had emerged from the blast's crater, retaliating by mortally wounding Piccolo with a Death Beam (in the manga, Frieza intentionally fired at Piccolo, while in the anime, Frieza fired at Goku and then Piccolo pushed him out of the way and took the blast instead). Frieza then used his telekinetic powers to make Krillin fly into the air and, despite Goku's pleas, he murders Krillin. Already bordering on the edge of his rage, Goku was pushed over the edge, his rage exploding, causing Frieza to inadvertently create what he had always feared: a Super Saiyan.

In the ensuing battle, Super Saiyan Goku and Frieza trade blows, but as the fight progresses, Frieza's 50% power clearly proves to be less than adequate against the Super Saiyan; even his Barrage Death Beam have little effect on the newly empowered Saiyan. Frieza attempts to remind Goku that the Saiyans were as ruthless as Frieza himself is in their barbarism, to which Goku replies that the Saiyans have "paid for their mistakes" now, causing Frieza to ask whether that was the reason he killed them easily.[7]

""Exasperating to find you underestimated your opponent, isn't it? And that's yours truly at just 70%. Oh, but fear not. The grand unveiling is under way.""
— "Avenge the Fallen, Goku! Countdown to the Planet's Destruction!"

Frieza reaches full power

In frustration, Frieza sends a Death Ball into the core of the planet, starting a chain reaction that would destroy Namek in five minutes (revealing immediately afterwards that he held back too much of his power for the Death Ball to be a complete success). Frieza unleashes 70% and then 100% of his power, which Goku requested, wanting to fight him using all his strength. Goku also notes that Frieza wanted it this way as well, because if he had not, he would have fired at the planet again. At this point, Frieza launches a terrific assault against Super Saiyan Goku, who had not expected Frieza's power to be as high as it is.

However, Super Saiyan Goku realizes that after sustaining so much damage in his 50% state, Frieza's body would no longer be able to handle his 100% power for very long. Super Saiyan Goku and Frieza face off and eventually, after a very long battle, Super Saiyan Goku gets the battle under his control, delivering a final momentous blow to the tyrant that symbolically ends Frieza's reign. Seeing Frieza's power slipping fast now, Super Saiyan Goku decides to call off the fight, claiming it would be pointless to continue, as Frieza is losing strength rapidly and Super Saiyan Goku had already humbled the tyrant.

Frieza is sliced by his own attack

"With me, you would live like a god. Yes, you could have anything. Or not, you could choose to suffer and die."
— Frieza, in "Bold and Fearless"

Humiliated, Frieza refuses to relent, attacking Super Saiyan Goku with two of his Death Saucers. As Super Saiyan Goku dodges the attacks, Frieza ironically becomes distracted long enough to be bifurcated by his own attack.

Barely clinging to life, but desperate to survive, Frieza begs for mercy, which Super Saiyan Goku hesitantly provides, giving him a little of his ki. Frieza's pride refuses to allow him to be beaten and saved by a Saiyan "monkey", and he expends what little energy he has left to attack Goku. Overcome with anger, Super Saiyan Goku fires an Angry Kamehameha that consumes both Frieza's attack and what remains of him in the process.

Cell Saga

Main article: Trunks Saga Unbeknownst to Goku and everyone else, Frieza was not killed on Namek. Frieza's shredded body floated in the planet's debris, kept company only by his thoughts of how the universe's conqueror had been thoroughly beaten by a lowly Saiyan. His father King Cold had crews search the area, not believing his son to have been destroyed by something as insignificant as the explosion of a planet. What could be found of Frieza is salvaged and reconstructed with cybernetic enhancements, leaving him scarred and bitter. Knowing he is now stronger than ever before, Frieza's first thought upon rehabilitation is revenge on those who defeated him on Namek.

Frieza beats Goku to Earth (despite his ill intentions towards Earth and all who lived there, Frieza notes It's a good planet on first viewing) and orders his henchmen to find and slaughter its inhabitants, with Frieza keen on killing his enemy's friends himself. However, his army is torn apart by a mysterious youth. Frieza dismisses his challenger as an insolent child, and pays him almost no heed until the boy reveals himself as another Super Saiyan.

"Not that you merit the attention, but I am going to kill you myself. You should feel honored."
— Frieza boasting to Future Trunks in "I Will Defeat Frieza! Another Super Saiyan"

Freezadies

Mecha Frieza is slain by Super Saiyan Future Trunks

Dumbstruck, Frieza makes several different efforts to kill the youth, such as energy blasts, each of which is parried easily (this occurs only in the anime while the youth wasted no time and killed Frieza after a single attack in the manga. Also, Gohan implies that Frieza was holding back 50% of his power in the manga whereas the anime has Frieza going all out). He then plays his trump card in the form of a Supernova (a Death Ball ten times the size of the one that destroyed Planet Namek). Even this is nonchalantly brushed away, until a mortified Frieza causes it to detonate with another shot of ki. Thinking him dead, both father and son are stunned when the youth fires a Burning Attack out of nowhere. Fuming, Frieza becomes oblivious to his opponent's position, and is surprised and sliced in half by the Saiyan youth before being cut to pieces and then vaporized with an energy blast, King Cold meets a similar fate, with the youth obliterating him with the God Breaker when the tyrant tries to attack him. Despite this, the common myth throughout the universe remains that Goku defeated Frieza on Namek. In the alternate future timelines of Future Trunks and Cell, it is implied that Future Goku used Instant Transmission to teleport to Earth and killed Frieza and his father King Cold instead of Trunks.

Frieza makes numerous cameo appearances throughout the remainder of the series from Hell. His first (and most major) role was teaming up with Cell and causing trouble in Hell, along with King Cold and the dead members of the Ginyu Force.[8] Frieza and King Cold were the only two villains in this scene to not be thrown onto the Mountain of Needles by Pikkon; Pikkon knocked Frieza out with a single punch to the face after elbowing King Cold in the stomach. Then all seven were locked up in a prison cell. This was one of the rare times Frieza and Cell (two of the three main villains of the show) are seen talking to each other. Frieza and Cell would occasionally train together in Hell.[9] Later, Frieza is shown observing Goku's fight with Kid Buu alongside other defeated villains from the series, even saying "I could have done the same thing if I hadn't lost both my legs!"

In the summary at the beginning of the film Frieza - after accidentally having been cut in half - is shown attacking Super Saiyan Goku with his "You Will Die By My Hand!" technique, only for Goku to defeat him with an Angry Kamehameha.

While Goku is training on his radish field, he closes his eyes and pictures that he is fighting Frieza, Cell, and Buu. The mental thought of Frieza attacks Super Saiyan Goku from behind, but Goku senses him and hits him in the face, defeating him.

Frieza hanging in a cocoon in Earth's Hell

After Frieza's death, his spirit was kept imprisoned in Earth's Hell, with the Angels of Hell being the ones who were tasked with ensuring that he remained captive.[10] During his time in Hell, Frieza's spirit retained the appearance of his Mecha Frieza state and was left trapped inside a cocoon.[11]

File:4451952367be37ab5c144b147c3ea83d.jpg

Frieza in pieces after being wished back

Contained in a cocoon in Earth's Hell, Frieza dreamed of his defeats at the hands of the Super Saiyans, Goku and Trunks, but soon woke up to the sight of the Angels of Hell. However, over fourteen years after Frieza's demise, his two of Frieza's men, Sorbet (commander of Frieza's army) and Tagoma (elite soldier), collect all of the Dragon Balls with the aid of the Pilaf Gang and resurrect him, and he is revived as he was just before his death, as Mecha Frieza and in pieces. Sorbet and Tagoma collect all of the pieces save for his right eye which is found by Pilaf, who hands it to Sorbet just as he and Tagoma are about to leave. On Sorbet's spaceship they put the organic parts in a Medical Machine, Frieza's body is regenerated and he reverts himself back into his first form completely free of his cybernetics. As he recovers inside the chamber Frieza dreams of his first defeat by Super Saiyan Goku, and angrily wakes up, shaking the entire ship.

File:Frieza-RF.png

Frieza after being regenerated in the movie

He was then introduced to Sorbet and Tagoma while they explained to him how they brought him back to life and they could have brought King Cold back to life as well but Frieza suggested that there was no need for that, and suggested he would need to wait for his vengeance against the Saiyans, he announces to his soldiers that he will not be satisfied until the Super Saiyans (Goku and Future Trunks) have both been killed. Tagoma then suggests to Frieza that he should just ignore Goku and the other Saiyans and focus on the universe. In the movie and manga Frieza furiously blasts Tagoma into outer space with a quick ki blast.

Sorbet preventing other deaths, activates the ship's energy shields. In the anime angry at Tagoma's suggestion to leave the Saiyans alone, he shot Tagoma with ki blasts instead of killing him because it would be considered boring to kill him quickly. Frieza is then informed by Sorbet that Goku's power has surpassed that of even Majin Buu, which is far more than Frieza could have imagined. But due to him being a prodigy, Frieza believes that through four months of serious training, he will be able to reach a level of power high enough to wipe out the Saiyans in the blink of an eye, in the movie and manga claiming he will be able to raise his power level from 530,000 to be 1,300,000.[3] He decided to train himself for four months in order to pull out his potential. For the next four months Frieza trained, sometimes using Tagoma as a training partner, during training sessions with Tagoma, Frieza would beat him within an inch of his life and then having him go to heal up for the next days training, allowing Frieza to both get stronger, and master his torturing-type fighting style; which would allow him to fight Goku for as long as possible without killing him, in order to cause the Saiyan as much pain as possible.

After all that time passed, Frieza and his forces eventually reach Earth and he gets excited about exacting his revenge on the Saiyans. As they are about to land Frieza begins laughing gleefully at his chance at revenge. After landing on Earth, he fires a Death Beam at North City, completely wiping it out, and then Frieza encounters the Z Fighters - who have gathered to try and resist him. Frieza gets impatient for Goku to arrive. Frieza notices that Krillin has been revived with the Dragon Balls and says that the Dragon Balls can revive the powerful and the pathetic. Frieza also gets remarks from Bulma, who sees him for the first time. Bulma asks Frieza for time for Goku to arrive, but he gives them only ten seconds. After the ten second are over, not interested in fighting until Goku arrives, Frieza has his army of 1,000 soldiers engage the Z Fighters, when Sorbet attempts to give orders to the soldiers Frieza flicks him away and instead has the soldiers all aim for Krillin as a joke - offering a planet to whoever kills him.

Frieza comments on Gohan's abilities as a fighter, and says that "he's as soft as his father". Soon Frieza's soldiers are defeated match by the Z Fighters, and so Frieza watches Sorbet command Shisami to enter the battle after he volunteers to do so. He watches as Shisami faces off against Piccolo before Gohan steps in and faces him, in the movie and manga Gohan turns Super Saiyan and defeats Shisami in one blow, while in the anime Tagoma kills Shisami in order to wipe out Gohan - the enemy's strongest warrior, something which intrigues Frieza. Frieza then agrees to let Tagoma become the supreme commander of his forces, and be given a free planet, if he wipes out the Z Fighters. He then proceeds to watch the battle unfold until Gotenks arrives, injuring Tagoma and asking to fight Frieza - only to unfuse. Frieza notes Goten's resemblance to Goku, and Trunks resemblance to Future Trunks and grows angry at how the Saiyans have multiplied, ordering Tagoma to wipe them out. Frieza tells Sorbet that the Super Saiyans are more fearful out of recordings.

Shortly afterwards, Frieza is approached by Captain Ginyu who has switched bodies with Tagoma while he was feeling pain on the ground. He explains to Frieza his hardships throughout the years from being swapped bodies to arriving on Earth to Frieza's return. Frieza is happy that Ginyu is alive and once more in his service, but is unimpressed by Ginyu's fighting pose, and asks him to be useful and wipe out the Z Fighters. Frieza watches with glee and Ginyu decimates the Z Fighters, noting that he is stronger than Tagoma was. However, Ginyu is defeated when Gohan transforms into a Super Saiyan, with Frieza expressing surprise that Goku's son was capable of obtaining the form.

Frieza Ginyu Sorbet

Frieza with Ginyu and Sorbet

In the anime, after Gohan tells Ginyu that he will spare him as he is not worth fighting, Frieza recalls that this scenario is identical to the last part of his battle with Goku on Namek and snaps, flying down to the battlefield in his hover chair and attacks Gohan with Death Beams whilst telling him to scream, beg for mercy, and run. After Gohan succumbs to his injuries and falls to the ground, Frieza attacks with a finishing Death Beam, suddenly, Piccolo jumps in the way of Frieza's attack - taking the full brunt of it - and protecting Gohan. In the manga Goku and Vegeta arrive as the Frieza Force is defeated. In the movie after the Frieza Force has been defeated, Frieza blows up his army out of disappointment. Frieza decides to wipe out the warriors one-by-one and one punches Gohan in the abdomen. He however is quickly revived by Piccolo, who pumped his heart, and was given a Senzu Bean from Krillin.

Fihjappy

Frieza became happy when Vegeta clap his hands.

After killing Piccolo in the anime, Frieza finds Gohan when he cries for Piccolo very amusing and decides to amuse himself and when Bulma finally talks to Whis, he disallows Sorbet to kill her at the moment in hopes that she might bring Goku to Earth. When he does not come right away, Frieza allows Ginyu to fight and kill Goku's friends so that he can be entertained at the least, but then Gohan stands up to Frieza and powers up into his Super Saiyan form once more to protect everyone, including his family and that power up eventually tires him out completely and Frieza once again decides to kill Gohan when Goku and Vegeta, who used Instant Transmission thanks to Gohan's power-up, blocks the Death Beam and Frieza becomes annoyed at first but then smiles evilly now that Goku is finally here at last, along with Vegeta. He tells them about how he returned to life and how excoriating Hell was and that Goku was the reason his life became Hell itself. After Vegeta kills Ginyu, Frieza recognizes Vegeta's increased strength and promises to kill him after Goku. Finally, after Goku and Frieza talk about their recent training, Frieza decides to transform into his final form from the start to avoid making mistakes again and prepares himself to fight. In the anime his transformation vaporizes the rest of his soldiers in the process (except Sorbet) and prepares himself to fight.

Frieza transforms manga

Frieza reveals that he can transform further in the manga

They start their fight in the ground after powering up and then power up again during close combat. Frieza actually thanks Goku for making himself train to fight him at this level but then gets angry again and plans to kill Krillin and Bulma with Ki blasts but Goku and Vegeta show up at the last minute and deflect them (Vegeta did this because Goku was pinned to the ground by Frieza at the time). Then they resume their fight and they take it all the way above the clouds. Frieza told Goku he attacked his friends so he can fight Goku at his angriest but Goku refuses to as well as him destroying the Namekian Dragon Balls. After being beat around, Frieza fires a Golden Death Ball at Goku and he uses a Kamehameha to collide, causing an explosion. After a Ki blast barrage conflict, Vegeta shows up and fights Goku which impresses Frieza and he questions his loyalty to him, though Frieza fires a blast at the two and tells Vegeta that he wants to fight Goku first. After he became irritated by Vegeta's continuous clapping, the Saiyan decides to take on the tyrant himself only for the two of them to negotiate for them to fight each other after Frieza kills Goku. In the manga the two fight and Goku has the advantage he than goes on to blast Frieza with a Kamehameha, prompting the tyrant to announce that he is soon going to reveal his further evolution. Frieza then witnesses Goku transform into his Super Saiyan Blue form.

Frieza after evolving into Golden Frieza

Frieza tries to knock out Goku from behind to gauge his power, but Goku catches this attack with his fist, prompting Frieza into finally transforming himself into Golden Frieza, despite his own warnings, feeling honored to be fighting close to the Saiyan's god. After saying goodbye in advance, Frieza re-proceeds to fight Goku and he had the upper hand at first but Goku blocked all of Frieza's upcoming energy attacks which results in an energy clash that lasts a while and results in a blinding explosion and both combatants are still in their prime. As Beerus and Whis show up for their dessert, thanks to his new exceedingly high power, Frieza once again gains the upper hand against Goku and after comparing how long it took to reach their new forms, Frieza decides to kill Goku immediately and his friends too so that he won't be lonely in Hell. When he spots Beerus, however he becomes frightened and frustrated that he might interfere but Beerus told Frieza to do as he pleases. Frieza then decides to continue his revenge and kept pushing him further and further, leaving Goku exhausted.

Golden Frieza easily dodging Goku's attacks

Frieza then strangles Goku with his tail and punches him in the gut and head repeatedly until Goku bit his tail forcing him to let go, yet Frieza still had the upper hand and knocked him down again. He then explains again why he hates Goku for his actions back on Planet Namek and tries to kill him with his energy attacks but for some reason Goku kept surviving them all. They were almost interrupted by Vegeta, who wanted to kill Frieza for Goku but he insisted that he almost has him. Goku also warns Frieza about his form's downside but he ignores his warnings and decides to wrap things up, with both combatants using every last bit of power they have left. At first, Frieza seemed to be dominating again, not even allowing Goku to drown to death, until Goku's prediction started to come true: he burns more power and stamina than his body can supply and didn't regulate it before he decided to exact his revenge. Due to his massive drop in power and stamina Goku knocks him away with God Shock Flash in the movie, and a forehead punch in the anime. Goku then suggests that Frieza leave so that they can have a rematch later, however Frieza signaled to have Sorbet shoot Goku straight in the chest with his ring. He then repeatedly kicks Goku and explains his weaknesses while doing so: his strength makes him careless. In the movie he asks Vegeta to finish Goku off - offering to make him supreme commander, though Vegeta declines and begins to fight Frieza. In the anime he was about to kill Goku once and for all when Vegeta attacks then Frieza dodges it.

Frieza about to be killed by Goku's God Kamehameha

When Vegeta tells Krillin to give Goku a Senzu Bean, Frieza tries to kill him with a Death Beam but Vegeta blocks it and it ends up killing Sorbet. Frieza hardly believes that Vegeta could kill him now, but he too, turns into a Super Saiyan Blue, which frightens Frieza at first. Frieza tries to hit Vegeta with a lot of Ki blasts but he was never fazed by any of them due to Frieza having lost most of his power. After a bit of big talk, Vegeta beats up Frieza and the tyrant then reverts into his Final form. Before Vegeta could kill Frieza, however, Frieza blows up the Earth and kills Vegeta and everyone and everything on Earth, including Pan, Videl, 18, Marron, Chi-Chi, Majin Buu, Mr. Satan, and Dr. Brief and Mrs. Brief. Stated by Beerus and Whis, they stated that Frieza survived the destruction thus is floating in space, preparing his next move. However, the event was undone by Whis' Temporal Do-Over technique and Goku turned into his Super Saiyan Blue God form and charged and launched a Kamehameha strong enough to destroy Frieza and sent him back to Hell before he can destroy the Earth. Once back in Earth's Hell, he was forced to watch the angels of Hell dance and sing while strapping a cocoon again, much to Frieza's chagrin.

Frieza and Goku clash once more

Frieza appears as one of the primary antagonists of Shin Budokai. He appears as the leader of a group of villains (composed of himself, Cooler, and Cell) who were able to leave Hell thanks to Janemba. Immediately after being resurrected, Frieza is confronted by Gohan, who transforms into a Super Saiyan. Final form Frieza is able to tire out Gohan without having to use his full power and decides to leave, revealing that, while in Hell, he has learned how to lower his power without having to use lower forms. Frieza sends Cell and Cooler to search for the Dragon Balls, and then he confronts Goku. Frieza and Goku fight, but Frieza is eventually defeated when Goku immobilizes him with a Pressure Point Attack and then does one of two things: blasts him with a Super Kamehameha, sending to Hell again, or leaves him immobilized.

After returning to Earth as fast as possible, he is met by the newly arrived Future Trunks along with kid Trunks, Goten, and Pikkon. Frieza engages in battle with them, though it was only a distraction as Frieza steals their Dragon Ball and Dragon Radar. Frieza then heads off to look for the Dragon Balls, defeating Krillin along the way.

Frieza vs 18

Frieza (powered up by evil energy) confronts Android 18

Later, he tracks down Android 18, trying to take her Dragon Ball. She tells him that Broly stole the Dragon Balls, Frieza fights the Legendary Super Saiyan and is at first defeated, but eventually succeeds and kills Broly. Frieza finds that Broly did not have the Dragon Balls and then goes on and collects a Dragon Ball. Towards the games finale, Android 18 arrives at where Frieza is with a Dragon Ball and he reveals his new plan; he is going to kidnap Android 18, destroy the planet, and then take 18 with him to planet Namek to steal their Dragon Balls. Frieza then powers himself up using evil energy, making him far stronger than anyone on the planet. Frieza becomes so strong that Android 18 states that even if she put all of her energy into one attack, it would not even scratch Frieza. However, Krillin arrives just as Frieza is about to destroy the planet and leave with 18. Krillin and Android 18's love and positive feelings for each other, along with the energy from the Spirit Bomb that Goku gave to Krillin, counter the evil energy that Frieza had built up, greatly weakening Frieza. Krillin (with some of the Spirit Bomb power) and Android 18 then go all out and manage to defeat Frieza, sending him to Hell once again.

It is implied that upon arriving in Hell, Frieza may have been transformed into Janemba due to the evil energy he absorbed, or that Janemba took the energy from Frieza. However, upon Janemba's defeat Frieza would have been returned to normal.

Xenoverse

While Goku is inside the healing chamber Frieza kills both Vegeta and Krillin, and then kills Gohan before Goku can arrive and save him. Frieza then faces off against the still injured Goku, who left the healing chamber far too early.

Villainous Mode Frieza (True Form)

Frieza prepares to fight Goku

When the Future Warrior travels back to stop this change from coming to pass, he arrives and helps the Z Fighters fight against Frieza (1st form). Under the influence of Towa's Dark Magic, instead of transforming into his 2nd form, Frieza transforms right into his Final Form, altering the timeline. However Piccolo arrives in time to assist the Future Warrior in combating Frieza, while Vegeta has Krillin injure him so he can be healed by Dende and receive a Zenkai in the hope that it will make him a Super Saiyan. With his new power Vegeta joins the battle with Frieza but is defeated as he was in the original timeline, however he and the Future Warrior manage to by enough time for Goku to arrive and allowing the dying Vegeta to inform him of Frieza's role in the Genocide of the Saiyans and the destruction of Planet Vegeta before dies from his injures restoring that part of the timeline. Together with the Future Warrior, Goku fights Frieza though Frieza proves to be too strong and Goku is forced to resort to the Spirit Bomb to defeat Frieza. The Future Warrior distracts Frieza long enough for Goku to prepare and hit him with a Large Spirit Bomb it appears as though Frieza has been killed.

Frieza attempts to kill Gohan and Piccolo with his Killer Ball technique, however the Future Warrior blocks it, and then he and Goku fight against Villainous Mode Dark Frieza at 100% Power, with Goku having to utilise another Spirit Bomb against him. Eventually the combined power of Future Warrior and Super Saiyan Goku is enough to defeat Dark Frieza, who loses the dark power up and returns to regular Frieza. Goku thanks the Warrior for their assistance but asks them to leave Frieza defeat up to him. Since the timeline had been fixed, the Future Warrior then leaves Goku and Frieza to their battle, as Porunga is summoned and Frieza speeds of towards him, with Goku giving chase.

In Age 850, Frieza (1st form) appears in Toki Toki City after the Future Warrior has completed Captain Ginyu training and become the sixth official member of the Ginyu Force. Having heard about the Warrior from Ginyu, Frieza decides to scout the Warrior for the Frieza Force and beings training the Warrior as their new Master. Upon completing their training under Frieza, Frieza makes the Future Warrior a member of Frieza's Honor Guard.

Kid Buu, Cell, and Frieza in Villainous Mode confront the Future Warrior

In the finale of Xenoverse, Démigra uses the Dragon Balls in Age 778 and revives Frieza, Cell, and Kid Buu and sends them to attack West City on Earth, putting each of them into the full Villainous Mode. The Future Warrior travels back in order to stop them, he fights all three of them and manages to defeat the team of villains.

Nekomajin

In the Nekomajin chapter "Neko Majin Z 3", published in August 2003 (Monthly Shōnen Jump, 2003, #9), Frieza is mentioned by Vegeta. Nekomajin takes place at some point after Age 784.

Frieza is somehow once again alive and ruling what is left of his empire, apparently more peacefully than before. Noticing that his son Kuriza, and one of his commanders Onio, have been away on Earth for too long, Frieza contacts Vegeta and asks him to bring them back to him. Though angry that Frieza is wasting his time, Vegeta agrees and heads off to tell the two that Frieza wants them to come back.

Frieza in Dragon Ball Online

In Dragon Ball Online, Frieza attacks Namek like in the manga, he goes through the conflict unaware that the Time Breakers have begun interfering and taking control of his soldiers. Like in the manga, Frieza transforms multiple times, fights the Z Fighters and defeats them until Goku arrives, at which point the two prepare to fight.

In Age 1000, Frieza's Army remnants have become a part of the Time Breakers alliance, their primary goal being to resurrect Frieza once more, which they can achieve by obtaining some of his remains, so they search around the area he was killed for some. Eventually they travel to the past and collect several of Frieza's remains in order to revive him.

However, in the present time, when Demon God Towa attacks the Earth and faces the Time Patrol and their allies, Xeno Frieza suddenly shows up - merged with a Dark Dragon Ball - alongside Dodoria and Zarbon. After Towa flees in fear, Frieza then prepares to face off with the Time Patrol.

What-if scenarios

Episode of Bardock

Frieza appears briefly in the first chapter of the manga Dragon Ball: Episode of Bardock, seen destroying Planet Vegeta.

Supersonic Warriors

Frieza (Immortal body)

Frieza after wishing for an immortal body in Supersonic Warriors

In Frieza's scenario in Dragon Ball Z: Supersonic Warriors, Frieza's life is the same as in the main series up until his final battle with Goku: Frieza manages to defeat Super Saiyan Goku and escapes Namek with Captain Ginyu just before it explodes. After returning to Planet Frieza, Frieza upgrades himself with cybernetic armor, and he and Ginyu go to hunt down Vegeta and Gohan. Frieza defeats and kills Super Saiyan Vegeta, and then heads to Capsule Corporation where the Z Fighters and their allies are trying to revive Goku. Krillin tries to stop Frieza but is defeated after running out of Senzu Beans, though he buys enough time for Goku to be revived. Goku confronts Frieza and requests West City not to be involved in their fight, but Frieza destroys the city against Goku's will. Gohan arrives and he and his father transform into Super Saiyans but, even with their combined power, they are defeated and killed by Frieza. While Frieza heads to his ship to relax, Ginyu takes the Dragon Radar and heads to find the Dragon Balls for Frieza. However, Dr. Gero sends Android 18 assisted by Android 17 and Android 16 to kill Frieza, but Frieza defeats them. Frieza then meets Ginyu, who has collected four of the Dragon Balls, and the two head to Gero's base, the location of the last three Dragon Balls. When Ginyu goes inside to get the Dragon Balls, he is attacked by Gero and has his energy taken. Frieza is confronted by Gero, but tells the doctor that he will not destroy him if he accepts to work for him. Gero briefly thinks about it but then refuses and attacks. Frieza defeats Gero and wishes for an immortal body, stripping him of his cybernetic upgrades and also causing him to no longer have to power up to 100%, making him identical in appearance to his regular Final form. After he fused with Kami, Piccolo quickly heads to fight the now immortal Frieza but is also defeated. Frieza kills off mankind and makes Earth the center of his empire under the name of Planet Frieza No. 80. Twenty years later, Present Cell awakens in his Perfect form thanks to adjustments by Gero before his death. After being told who he is, Cell attacks and destroys Frieza's castle and new elite force. Frieza appears and confronts Present Cell, and the two have a brief discussion before engaging in one last battle. Frieza defeats Present Cell, who reveals that he can regenerate as much as he wants. Frieza realizes that he can kill Present Cell only by destroying all of his cells and hits him with a Death Ball, destroying him and the Earth. Frieza then leaves and conquers every planet in the universe without opposition.

In Ginyu's scenario in Supersonic Warriors, Ginyu manages to defeat almost all of the Z Fighters and the Androids. In the finale, Ginyu and Frieza defeat Gohan and Piccolo, and successfully collect all seven of Earth's Dragon Balls. Happily, Frieza tells Ginyu that he can have the first wish and Frieza will take the others. Ginyu's wish resurrects the Ginyu Force and then Shenron disappears. The shocked Frieza is told by the injured Piccolo that the Earth's Dragon Balls only grant one wish. In a rage, Frieza kills Piccolo and then attacks the Ginyu Force out of anger at them having their wish granted. Ginyu manages to calm Frieza down but, still angry, Frieza destroys the Earth. Ginyu and Frieza then return to Planet Frieza and resume their normal lives.

In Dragon Ball Z: Supersonic Warriors 2, there is a what-if scenario where Frieza arrives on Planet Namek in his Final Form and decides to take care of any problems himself. He kills Vegeta and then fights and defeats Super Saiyan Goku, but is caught in Planet Namek's explosion. Frieza is found by King Cold and rebuilt as Mecha Frieza, he then heads to Earth, fights and is defeated by Future Trunks, but he and his army escape in their spaceship. Frieza returns when the world has been decimated by the Androids and uses his new power to kill Future Trunks and Goku. Frieza then takes their Dragon Balls and becomes the Immortal King of the Universe.

Another scenario in Dragon Ball Z: Supersonic Warriors 2 has Cooler sent by King Cold to assist Frieza on Namek. After several failed assassination attempts, Frieza goes to fight Cooler and his squad. After killing them, he claims the Big Gete Star as his own and uses it to help him rule the universe.

Budokai

Budokai - Frieza Immortal

Frieza gaining immortality in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai

In Dragon Ball Z: Budokai, in a two part what-if saga, "Raging Frieza" and "The True Ruler", Frieza becomes enraged when finding out his goal of wishing for eternal life with the Namekian Dragon Balls will not happen (as he does in the main timeline). Instead of fighting Vegeta, he first defeats Gohan. When Piccolo arrives, he fights Frieza but is defeated. Frieza then powers up to his final form and kills Vegeta with the Death Beam. When arriving and finding most of his friends killed, Goku's rage builds up and he transforms into a Super Saiyan. Frieza goes to his 100% full power and eventually kills Goku. He then sees Porunga and wishes for eternal life. After becoming immortal, Frieza proceeds to destroy Namek and then heads to Earth in order to blow it up.

In Frieza's arcade mode in Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai - Another Road, Frieza enters into the World Martial Arts Tournament. After he defeats all of his opponents, he tells the World Tournament Announcer that he is the ruler of the universe and that he is going to sell the planet, but the announcer believes that he is joking. Frieza threatens the announcer, but then decides not to bother and instead celebrates his victory in peace.

Budokai Tenkaichi

In Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi, in the what-if saga "The Cosmic Emperor", Frieza manages to defeat Super Saiyan Goku, but is still unable to take gain eternal youth. Frieza eventually confronts Cooler and manages to defeat him. Then, Frieza goes on to take complete control of the universe, even killing Future Trunks, with Cooler as his elite right-hand man.

In Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2, in the what-if saga "Beautiful Treachery", Zarbon learns about the wishing powers of the Dragon Balls and betrays Frieza: Zarbon informs Cooler in order to use him as a distraction against Frieza. Frieza and Cooler's forces go to war against each other, with Frieza (in his first form) and Cooler fighting each other head on. Frieza eventually senses Porunga's summoning and ceases fighting Cooler to check. Frieza proceeds to battle Zarbon and Goku before leaving to fight Cooler again. Frieza and Cooler begin fighting at maximum power, and end up destroying Namek.

Two what-if stories include Frieza in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3: "Galaxy Battle" and "Unexpected Help". "Galaxy Battle" is the third story Kibito Kai shows to Goku: Frieza did not plan on killing the Saiyans until around Age 762, and the Saiyans attack Frieza. After the Saiyans defeat most of his forces and King Vegeta defeats King Cold, Frieza in his first form personally arrives and defeats Bardock, before slaughtering both King Vegeta and Prince Vegeta. Bardock remains and uses up all of his energy to kill Frieza, but dies in the process. "Unexpected Help" is the final world that Kibito Kai shows to Goku: when Mecha Frieza and King Cold arrive on Earth and prepare to terrorize its people, they are confronted by Spike the Devil Man. Mecha Frieza fights Spike and is immune to all of the Devilman's attacks until Spike uses his Devilmite Beam, killing the tyrant due to the evil in his heart. Frieza's remaining soldiers and father follow soon after.

Battle of Z

Frieza appears in several what-if scenarios in Battle of Z.

If Frieza is used in the scenario "Revolting Soldiers", Frieza's army of 150 Frieza Soldiers will claim that they believe that Frieza will wipe them out like he did the Saiyans. Frieza tells them that this claim is ridiculous but proceeds to wipe out all 150 of them anyway due to their treachery.

Frieza also appears in the scenario "Spirit Bomb", in which he manages to finally get his wish to become invincible and immortal (also gaining the ability to create clones of himself). Frieza's clones battle Goku, Krillin, Gohan, and Piccolo while Frieza watches from atop a mountain. Upon the defeat of the clones, Frieza himself comes down and begins to dominate the Z Fighters in battle until Goku gathers energy from all over the universe into a Universal Spirit Bomb and blasts Frieza down into Namek's core.

Power

Manga and Anime
FriezaCellVsGoku

Frieza in his true form in GT

Frieza was born a mutant with abnormally great power in comparison to the rest of his race.[12] Even though the rest of Frieza's family are strong, Frieza's power has always been in a completely different league.[13] He is also recognized as a prodigy of such innate talent and natural growth that he became known as the most powerful warrior in the universe with no real training. Frieza's first form could calmly destroy planets, kill King Vegeta with a single blow and effortlessly pummel Nail into a critical state. In his second form, Frieza had little trouble against Vegeta, Gohan and Krillin's combined effort. Only against Piccolo (merged with Nail) did Frieza fight seriously. Once outmatched, Frieza transformed again, quickly dominating Piccolo with a torturous onslaught.

In his true form Frieza fought on par with Goku despite his tremendous Zenkai increase. Once Frieza unleashed 50%, he quickly dominated Goku (noting that even 33% would be too much) even against Goku's Kaio-ken x10. Against Goku's Kamehameha-Kaio-ken x20 combination, barely using the full force of 50% was enough to disperse Goku's attack with a single hand, only sustaining minor burns on it. Frieza survived a Large Spirit Bomb though was almost brought to the brink of death. Once Goku obtained Super Saiyan, Frieza utilizes 100%, holding his own for a while against Goku and landing some blows, but is ultimately outclassed. One year after his defeat on Namek and restored with cybernetic parts, Frieza was noted to be much stronger than before, himself believing that he could kill Super Saiyan Goku singlehandedly. When Mecha Frieza fought Super Saiyan Future Trunks, he felt only 50% was enough to defeat the half-Saiyan, though it was he instead who was easily beaten. Additionally, in the anime King Kai notes that 50% Power Mecha Frieza's Supernova attack was ten times stronger than 50% Power Frieza's Destroy the Planet! Death Ball.

In Dragon Ball Super, Frieza trains for four months to prepare for Goku. After unlocking his latent potential, Frieza's power increased dramatically, noting that the combined might of the Z-Fighters and Jaco were no match for him even in his first form, able to easily defeat Super Saiyan Gohan with a barrage of Death Beams and kill Piccolo with a single shot. Merely powering up into his true form disintegrated all his surrounding soldiers. In his true form, Frieza is strong enough to fight almost on par with Goku (who had reached the level of gods) though Frieza did have to attack Goku's friends to land an attack.[14] In the anime only Frieza in his final form is show to be superior to Super Saiyan God, as while fighting Saiyan beyond God Goku, it is noted by Krillin and Gohan that they could not see either Goku or Frieza's movements, while they had previously been able to see Super Saiyan God Goku and suppressed Beerus' movements.

After he transforms into Golden Frieza he is soon revealed to be far more than Goku imagined, easily decimating Goku for a while in his new godly form with little to no damage on Frieza's part. At full power, both Goku and Frieza note that Frieza has become strong enough that he could probably kill Super Saiyan Blue Goku in an instant if he fought seriously. However, Frieza begins to tire rapidly due to not having fully mastered his new form, causing his power to drop quickly. Even exhausted and holding back, Frieza almost kills Goku with a point blank ki blast. However Frieza's power eventually drops low enough for Goku to gain the upper hand, with Frieza's blows becoming completely ineffective. Once returning to his normal form, despite his exhaustion, Frieza was able to near-instantly destroy the Earth. In the manga it is said that Golden Frieza was so powerful that it took Super Saiyan Blue Goku and Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta together to take him down.

In the Super 17 Saga of Dragon Ball GT, Frieza and Cell are stated to have powered up after training in Hell for many years and confidently challenge Goku even after having witnessed him fight an opponent such as Kid Buu. Ultimately however, Goku is able to outmaneuver them with his child form's base power.

Films

In the Dragon Ball: Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans OVAs, Ghost Frieza is able to put a fight against Super Saiyan Future Trunks and Super Saiyan Vegeta, thanks to the power boost he got from Dr. Raichi. In Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn, fourth form Frieza appears as the leader of the villains who have escaped Hell, however base form Gohan defeated Frieza in one blow.

In Dragon Ball Z: The Real 4-D, Frieza in his final form was able to dominate Goku when Goku was in his base form. When he transformed into a Super Saiyan, Frieza, still in his final form easily overwhelmed Goku without a scratch, leaving him barely able to move following their Kamehameha vs. Death Ball clash. When Super Saiyan Vegeta, Piccolo, and Krillin joined the battle, he was able to easily blast them away, only to be killed when Goku created a massive Spirit Bomb.

"Holy crap! That's incredible! Just what kind of training did he do?!"
— Goku amazed by Frieza's power when entering his fourth form, after training

In Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’, upon being revived and regenerated into his fully organic first form, Frieza notes that his power is rusty due to years trapped in Earth's Hell. After training for four months, his power easily surpasses the Z Fighters in his first form and was able to place Gohan into a near-death state with a single blow. Once unleashing the full power of his true form he was capable of fighting Goku in his base form, but is inevitably outclassed.

Further Evolution Frieza3

Golden Frieza while he's stomping Goku

With his new evolution, Golden Frieza, the tyrant is extremely powerful, outclassing both Goku and Vegeta in their Super Saiyan Blue forms,[15] even without fighting seriously or using his full power.[16][17] Even after Golden Frieza's power and stamina dropped dramatically due to not having adjusted to his new form, he still fought on par with Goku until finally it dropped enough that it unfazed Goku with a direct energy punch to the face at which point Goku gained the upperhand.

Statements by authors and guidebooks
Goku Vegeta vs Freeza

Frieza faces Goku and Vegeta together

In his true form on Namek, Frieza has a power level of 120,000,000 at 100% of full power according to the Daizenshuu 7 and several video games. The World of Dragon Ball Z states that Goku and Frieza were equal but the power output of 100% drained Frieza rapidly, which lead to his defeat. The movie pamphlet for Dragon Ball Z: The Tree of Might states that Frieza has a power level of 85,000 in his first form. Daizenshuu 2 states that Frieza's dormant power in his final form is "immeasurable". At the same time, Akira Toriyama stated in Dragon Ball Volume ‘F’ that even Frieza is no match for Beerus, no matter what he does.[18]

An advertisement for Dragon Ball Z: The Real 4-D has Frieza state that his power level in The Real 4-D is 5,300,000,000.[19]

Video games

Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 describes 100% Power Frieza and Super Saiyan Goku as being equal in speed and strength during their final battle on Namek.

In the Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans game, Ghost Frieza and Ghost Cooler together are able to hold their own against the Z Fighters, but are ultimately defeated. When Ghost Frieza is later fought again on Planet Kuhn, he has further powered-up an able to hold his own against the entire Z Fighter team at their strongest, but is still defeated in the end.

In the story of the game Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai, (which takes place two years after Buu's defeat) Frieza is able to tire out Super Saiyan Gohan using his Fourth Form only in his base power, Piccolo and Gohan also reference him as being more powerful than Super Buu. Frieza at full power defeats Legendary Super Saiyan Broly behind the scenes (Legendary Super Saiyan Broly was later shown to give Super Saiyan 3 Goku trouble, meaning that at full power Frieza had seemingly equalled Super Saiyan 3 Goku in power), and is shown to be stronger than Super Gotenks (with Pikkon also referencing him to be stronger than Cooler, Cell, and the aforementioned Broly). Later in Shin Budokai, he uses his evil energy in order to vastly power himself up, giving himself unlimited energy; when this happens, he briefly reclaims his title of strongest in the universe until he loses power due to a large excess of positive energy built up by Krillin and Android 18.

In Dragon Ball: Xenoverse, during the Frieza Saga, Frieza is given a dark power up by the Time Breakers. At 100% power in Fourth Form he is strong enough to fight both the Future Warrior and Super Saiyan Goku at the same time, and even then, in the end Super Saiyan Goku needs to utilize a second Spirit Bomb during their battle. When Frieza returns possessed by Demon God Demigra (four years after the battle with Buu), he - together with the powered-up Cell and Buu - are able to briefly hold their own against the Future Warrior and Goku (who possesses unmastered god power), however they are beaten.

Golden Frieza is said to have unmatched power in promo material for Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Mission 2.

Techniques

Main article: List of techniques used by Frieza

Transformations

While other beings in the Dragon Ball franchise usually transform to increase their power, Frieza's power is naturally so great that originally his body could not properly contain it, and so Frieza developed series of physical transformations to limit his actual strength. He originally had four forms, with his fourth being his true form and first three designed to restrict and conceal his power from his enemies. Frieza says even upon transforming to his second form has a hard time controlling himself due to the immensity of his current strength. That would suggest that the second and third forms are mere physical augmentations that allow Frieza to build enough strength to revert to his true form. This also serves to torment his opponents by giving them a false sense of hope.

Later on, after a long period of intense training, Frieza became able to instantly transform from his first form straight to his true form. To which, he obtained proper control of his true form's power, allowing him to access it unhindered. He also attained a new transformation which greatly increased his power instead.

First Form

Main article: Transforming Ability

Rof frieza

Frieza's First Form in Resurrection ‘F’

In his first form, Frieza is a short humanoid being with a large chestnut-shaped skull with two horns that protrude at near 45 degree angles. He also has a tail with a spiked end, which is relatively thick in width, able to crack the ground when slammed, as well as having three talon-like toes. He has purple sections on his head, shoulders, and abdomen. His pink parts with lines appear on his arms, legs, and cheeks as well as his lilac skin on his face, feet, and hands. He dons the wristbands and ankle bands with brown sections with lines on the front. He has red eye pupils and his lips are darker red. He wears the same upper-body armor and shorts that many of his subordinates (including the Saiyans) are shown to wear, and in addition with a red scouter on some occasions. His power level has been stated to be 530,000 by himself.

He used this form again when he was revived by Sorbet and Tagoma in Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’, after having his organic parts placed in a regeneration chamber. He also used it upon arriving on Earth. Due to his training, his power surpassed even the likes of Ultimate Gohan.

Second Form

Main article: Transforming Ability

Frieza100Million

Frieza in his Second Form

His second form is similar in appearance to the first, except much larger, both in height and muscle mass, and a more mature-looking face. His horns grow longer and curve sharply upwards into near right angles. His armor cannot contain his form and shatters, leaving him with a new, white natural armor covering his chest and shoulders. He has purple sections on his shoulders and abdomen, and orange sections on his forearms and shins. His power level has been stated to be over 1,000,000 by himself.

Third Form

Main article: Transforming Ability

FriezaThirdFormNV

Frieza in his Third Form

Frieza's third form is again more brutish, with an extremely elongated skull. His facial features contort and change, with his nose melding into his mouth to form a crude beak. His original horns recede and are now white in color, erupting in pairs along the length of his head. Two pairs of spikes grow out of his back and curve upward somewhat, and the armor on his shoulders fling themselves outward like shoulder pads. He walks and stands with a slight hunch, as if the strain of supporting his head was too much for even Frieza's own body to bear. Frieza stated that no one had ever seen this form before.

Final Form

FriezaFinalFormEp84

Frieza in his True Form

This form is also referred to as Super Frieza (超フリーザ, Sūpā Furīza). It is the form that Frieza was born in, thus being his "true" or "base" form. Drastically differing from his previous transformations, in his fourth form, Frieza instead regresses, with his former form cracking and shattering like a shell, becoming a sleek and short, white lizard-like, almost harmless-looking creature; his horns and spikes disappear and his physique becomes streamlined. His skin becomes pure, solid-white with purple sections on his head, shoulders, forearms, abdomen and shins with the lines on his cheeks remained intact. His arms, legs, cheeks, and tail is longer and white the lilac skin on his face, neck, hands, and feet. All injuries taken in other forms are healed. This is the form that allows him to reach his full potential. Frieza's regular final form is him using less than a third of his power.[20] According to him, the only ones who have ever managed to harm him in this form are Goku and his father.

Because of his initial difficulty controlling his true power, Frieza's body is strained when unleashing too much power. Against Goku, he decided to use 50% of his power to ensure that his opponent didn't outclass him. He also noted that he has never had to power up to 50% to fight an opponent before, as everyone else was defeated by lesser levels of his power. When he finds that he is easily beating Goku at this point, he decreases his power slightly by an unknown amount and still outmatches him. Frieza later increases his power up to 70% to survive Goku's Large Spirit Bomb.

100% Full Power

Main article: 100% Full Power

FullPowerFrieza

Frieza in his Full Power true form during his invasion of Namek

Once attaining at least 85% strength in his true form, the strain of containing this immense power begins to noticeably effect Frieza's body, causing his muscles to increase. At 100%, his muscle mass becomes engorged compared to his previously sleek frame. With absolute strength, he is able to make Super Saiyan Goku struggle during the final battle on Planet Namek. However, due to the strain on his body, he is not able to fight at maximum capacity for long, slowly weakening. Also, Goku says he was holding back to test the limits of Frieza's full power until Porunga appeared. In this state, he obtains a light blue aura.

Frieza's 100% Power form is a temporary power-up in Supersonic Warriors that can be used by Frieza in any of his states: Final form (LV1), Mecha form (LV2), and Immortal Final form (LV3); unlike in the manga and anime, Frieza can go to 100% Power instantaneously and without gaining any extra muscle. In its sequel, Supersonic Warriors 2, Frieza can use his full power through the technique named 100% Activation which, like in the previous game, does not increase his muscles but instead gives him a white and purple aura. In the story mode of Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai, Frieza can control his 100% power form while in Hell, being able to power up to it instantaneously and without the risk of losing any power, making him able to stay in the form for as long as he wishes. Later on in the story, Frieza absorbs large quantities of evil energy, making him far stronger than anyone else on the planet.

File:Frieza revival render.png

Frieza at full power in Resurrection ‘F’

By the time of his second invasion of Earth, Frieza trained to gain an extraordinary increase in power compared to his fight on Namek. At the same time, Frieza no longer needs to enlarge his muscles in order to use his full power. This makes him no longer strain his body and thereby allowing him to maintain his peak power for much longer durations of time unhindered. He also seemingly gained the ability to immediately access his true form from his first form without entering the other forms. He gained these abilities at some point during his training.[21] This mastered state of Frieza's final form is referred to as Full Power[22] or Final Form.[23]

In the extra missions in Dragon Ball: Xenoverse, it is shown that even after mastering his final form, Frieza can still bulk up if he wishes, increasing his power somewhat.

Mecha Frieza

Main article: Cosmic Suit

FriezaFinalFormRobotNV

Frieza in his synthetic state

Mecha Frieza (メカフリーザ), briefly referred to as Powered-Up Form by Frieza in the manga, is Frieza rebuilt with cybernetic enhancements by scientists after what remained of the still-living Frieza was salvaged after being physically ruined while caught in Planet Namek's explosion. The whole of the lower half of his body, entire left arm, and right side of his face was replaced with scarring and metal accouterments covering what little was left of his organic self. These enhancements allowed him to exceed the limits imposed by his fully organic form, though by how much or in what way is unknown. In the English dubbed, this form has a slight mechanical sound to his voice.

Lacking his physical body, Frieza's spirit remains with the appearance of Mecha Frieza during his time in Hell up until his resurrection in Resurrection ‘F’.[11] Upon his revival, he is still Mecha Frieza (in pieces), however he is soon regenerated, regaining his full organic body.

In the video game Dragon Ball Z: Supersonic Warriors, Frieza obtains a cybernetic suit of armor that he places over his injuries after defeating Goku and which is his level two state in the game; while wearing the armor his appearance is identical to Mecha Frieza's but he is strong enough to defeat the Super Saiyans and Red Ribbon Androids. In Dragon Ball Z 2 V, when Frieza is in his alternate Cooler costume, Mecha Frieza is replaced with Meta-Cooler. It is to be noted that despite being outfitted with cybernetics, he is still susceptible to ki-sense unlike the Red Ribbon Army-created cyborgs/androids. This is especially evident with his travelling to Earth, where the Z-Fighters managed to sense Frieza's approach and form a resistance well before King Cold's ship even reached orbit.

Golden Frieza

Main article: Golden Frieza

Golden Frieza full

Golden Frieza

During his training as preparation for his rematch against Goku, Frieza obtained this new form. It is referred as an Ultimate Evolution. While similar in appearance to his base form, his skin turns dark purple, gains pronounced eye ridges, and is encased in a biological armor covering all but his face, hands, and feet. It is glimmering gold in color but with a darker covering his arms and midsection down. He retains his purple plates but loses the ones on his shoulders and the ones on his forearms and shins become oval-shaped. He also grows noticeably taller and gains a slight increase in muscle mass. His aura also becomes a blaze of fire-like orange.

Unlike his first three forms, this one increases his power beyond his Final Form. The increase in power is so great that Vegeta was initially too fearful to face him, with his power outclassing Super Saiyan Blue Goku by a considerable amount even though in the movie Frieza did not showcase his full power when fighting him and was holding back the whole fight in an attempt to torture Goku.[16][17] The form gained open acknowledgement by even Beerus and Whis from Frieza's tremendous growth in power, and in the anime Goku notes that were Frieza to fight seriously he could potentially kill Goku in an instant.

Despite the immense increase of overall power, it comes at a great cost. After only a few minutes of usage, the intense energy this form generates burns through Frieza's body too quickly for him to handle, draining him of large amounts of stamina quickly and thereby affecting his performance in battle before ultimately forcing Frieza to revert to his base form. Vegeta speculated that Frieza abandoned his training and came straight to Earth after he unlocked the form, given how much stamina and power Frieza was losing while in the form and Goku noted that Frieza can probably overcome this flaw if he allowed himself time to properly adjust to this new form. It is unknown if he possess this weakness in the manga, as the fight was not shown and it was said that it took both Super Saiyan Blue Goku and Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta together to defeat him.

Angered

Angered Golden Frieza in Dragon Ball Heroes

Angered Golden Frieza is an empowered state of Golden Frieza. This form is a result of Golden Frieza becoming extremely angry and further powering up. In this state Golden Frieza's eyes become bloodshot, and the veins on his skin bulge out - signifying his anger and power increase. As a result of the power up his body also begins to glow and the golden armor he possess gains a greater shine.

Frieza briefly powers up into this form when he begins losing against Goku, roaring in anger and glowing brightly as he powers up - causing the sea to rise, however he has lost too much power and stamina and so collapses to the ground. This form of Frieza is playable from God Mission 6 of Dragon Ball Heroes.

Hypothetical Final Form

Episode 83 hff

Frieza's hypothetical final form

Frieza's hypothetical final form, is a form imagined by Krillin when Frieza announces he will transform into his actual fourth form in the manga and anime series. The form also appears as a technique for Frieza and other characters in the Dragon Ball Z Collectible Card Game. Overall, it appears similar to his third form with two additional horns near the front, razor-sharp jaws, and a long purple tongue. Also, in the manga, the form's shoulders are sharpened.

Xeno Frieza (One Star)

Xeno Frieza fused with the One-Star Dark Dragon Ball

After the Dark Dragon Balls scatter through space and time, one of them merges with Frieza, during his final battle with Super Saiyan Goku on Namek. This results in Frieza's regular final form becoming strong enough to overwhelm Super Saiyan Goku, and at 100% Full Power is able to hold his own against both Super Saiyan Goku (Namek) and Xeno Goku.

Frieza's appearance when merged with the Dark Dragon Ball slightly alters, with his eyes becoming blank, and the Dark Dragon Ball appearing on his chest, with black lines coming out of it. This version of Frieza is known as Xeno Frieza.

Majin Frieza

Frieza appears in this form in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 2. Frieza's power increases greatly in this form, to the point of being able to fight Super Saiyan 2 Goku. In the story mode, he and Cell are revived and turned into Majins by Babidi. However, they are once again beaten by Goku and the other Z Fighters. When Majin Buu kills Babidi, Frieza and Cell turn back to their old selves and do not remember anything of being controlled by Babidi. After that, they are beaten and absorbed by Super Buu, and sent back to Hell when Super Buu is defeated. Majin Frieza is also a starter character in Dragon Ball Z 2 V. His appearance while under Babidi's control also differs in that he bears the Majin mark on his forehead.

Frieza (Evil Energy absorbed)

In Shin Budokai, Frieza absorbs and begins generating evil energy in order to power himself up. The presence of evil energy inside him causes him to start to become Janemba, and bulks up his muscles to the size that they are usually at when he is using his Full Power. Frieza attempts to destroy the planet, but is beaten by Krillin and Android 18 after their positive energy weaken him, and he is sent to Hell. While in Hell, it is implied that Frieza may have been fully transformed into Janemba by the evil energy he generated.

Fourth Transformation

Main articles: Transforming Ability and Fourth Transformation In Cooler's ending of the New World Tournament in the PSP game Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai - Another Road, Frieza achieves the fifth form at some point after his match with Cooler, though he is not shown in the form on-screen: after Frieza congratulates Cooler on winning the tournament, Cooler decides that he and Frieza will destroy the Saiyans with their power and he wants to have another battle with his brother to show the universe their family's true power. The two then transform (though only Cooler is shown), and attack Goku and Vegeta.

In Dragon Ball Fusions, the resulting fusion of Frieza and Final Form Cooler: Fooler, has the appearance of Frieza in the fourth transformation.

Kochikame

Frieza with Zarbon and Dodoria in Episode of Bardock

Frieza makes some appearances in other mangas that are made for special events, like a special chapter made for the 30th anniversary of KochiKame. Frieza is waiting with Appule on Namek for the three other Dragon Balls to be found, when Ryotsu Kankichi comes and says that Frieza cannot park his spaceship there. Frieza uses a Death Beam to kill Ryotsu Kankichi but, to their surprise, he is still alive. Ryotsu Kankichi yells that they have to pay the fine and Frieza attacks with an energy wave, which also fails to hurt Ryotsu Kankichi. When Ryotsu Kankichi pulls a Rocket Launcher out of the air, Appule says that there is no doubt and that Ryotsu Kankichi is a gag manga character. Frieza says he does not care because he is the strongest being in the universe and he fires blasts at Ryotsu Kankichi until he is tired. When even this does not kill Ryotsu Kankichi, Frieza leaves in his spaceship with Appule, and says that nothing happened.

Other

Frieza has made numerous appearances in other media. He has appeared in Japanese commercials, notably for the video game Super Gokuden: Kakusei-Hen.

On March 25, 2006, on Fuji TV, Frieza and Goku appeared in the segment IQ Mirror Mistake 7 (IQミラーまちがい7, Aikyuu Miraa Machigai Nana) in the game show IQ Supplement (IQサプリ). In this segment, 7 mistakes can be found throughout a short animation made specifically for the show. In the scene, Frieza has gathered all seven Dragon Balls and is about to summon forth the Namekian dragon, when Goku suddenly appears. Goku vows to stop him, but Frieza has other plans. Frieza rapidly transforms to his final form, while Goku transforms into a Super Saiyan. The two fly across the face of Namek, exchanging blows with neither backing down. Frieza prepares and fires a "Destroy The Planet!" Death Ball at Goku, but the Saiyan counters it with a Super Kamehameha. The two waves collide, but the Super Kamehameha is too much for Frieza to handle. On April 7, 2007, IQ Mirror Mistake 7 was re-aired during Fuji TV's historical special Nippon Ijin Taishō · Saikyō no Ijin wa Dare? (日本偉人大賞・最強の偉人は誰?; lit. "Japan's Great Awards - Who is the Strongest Hero?"), which also featured a special segment in which Goku and the World Tournament Announcer appear. IQ Mirror Mistake 7 was also shown by Ryūsei Nakao (Frieza's Japanese voice) at Animazement 2008.

The Japanese nu metal/punk band Maximum the Hormone released 「F」 as part of an A-side of a music single on July 9, 2008. The entirety of the song references Frieza and his character's arc, with the single itself rising as high as number two on the Oricon music chart.

A commercial for "Kirin Mets Grape Frieza" depicts Frieza entering his various transformation states barring his Ultimate Evolution state.

In the manga Black Cat, the character Sven Vollfied is often seen using his cell phone. At the top of the phone's wrist strap is a miniature-sized badge of Frieza's head. A caricature of Frieza mixed with a grays was parodied as a mech pilot in an episode of Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi. The anime Yakitate!! Japan featured a spoof re-enactment of the fight between Goku and Frieza, with a character clad in a refrigerator representing the latter. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure; Diamond is Unbreakable features a "Stand" character named "Red Hot Chili Pepper", whose design is confirmed by author Hirohiko Araki to be based on Frieza's final form. The Cartoon Network staple Codename: Kids Next Door had a parody of their own of the climactic fight and the Frieza character, with the Delightful Children From Down the Lane portraying him as a multi-headed monstrosity.

List of characters killed by Frieza

  • King Vegeta – Killed by Frieza with a single punch.
  • King Vegeta's Elite Soldiers – Killed by Frieza using his Eye Lasers.
  • Bardock – Bardock was apparently killed when Frieza threw his Supernova at Planet Vegeta to blow it up. Several media released after Dragon Ball Z: Bardock - The Father of Goku show that Bardock was sent to another time instead of dying.[25][26]
  • Frieza Soldiers – Killed by the Supernova that Frieza uses when he decides to destroy Planet Vegeta, as they were in the way.
  • Saiyans – When Frieza destroyed Planet Vegeta, most of the entire Saiyan race was killed.
  • Namekians – Killed many during the war on Namek. They were later revived with the Dragon Balls.
  • Cargo – Killed by Frieza with an energy blast over Moori's shoulder. He was later revived with the Dragon Balls with the rest of the Namekians (Frieza only kills him in the manga, as in the anime Cargo is killed by Dodoria).
  • Orlen – He returned to Frieza after discovering the hidden village Vegeta attacked, but as he had not found out where Vegeta had hidden the Dragon Ball, Frieza killed him with his Eye Laser, threatening to do the same to Zarbon if he did not find Vegeta and make him talk.
  • Namole – While Namole timidly delivered the news that the Ginyu Force were arriving soon, Frieza kills him for showing fear in his presence.
  • Dende – Frieza saw that Dende had the power to heal, so he killed him with a Death Beam to eliminate this threat. He was later revived with the Dragon Balls.
  • Vegeta – Frieza mercilessly beat him up, and then when Goku came and Vegeta talked about Frieza being beaten by a Saiyan, Frieza killed the Saiyan Prince with a Death Beam through the chest just to shut him up. Before dying, he told Goku to destroy Frieza, but was later revived with the Dragon Balls. When the timeline is altered in Dragon Ball: Xenoverse, Frieza kills Vegeta before Goku even arrives.
  • Krillin – Frieza lifted him into the air using telekinesis and blew him up when he clenched his fist, inducing Goku's first Super Saiyan transformation. He was later revived with the Namekian Dragon Balls. (Note: This was Krillin's second time dying, as he was killed by Tambourine in Dragon Ball). When the timeline is altered in Dragon Ball: Xenoverse, Frieza kills Krillin before Goku even arrives.
  • Unnamed Captain – Killed by Frieza, who pierced him with his hand from behind after he retreated from Future Trunks.
  • Tagoma – Killed by Frieza when he says that Frieza should just forget about Goku and the others (Frieza only kills him in the movie[15]).
  • North City Civilians – Upon beginning his invasion of Earth, Frieza destroys North City with a Death Beam, killing all of the civilians. Though, they are revived later by Bulma.
  • Piccolo – Killed by Frieza when he stepped in front of a Death Beam meant for Gohan. He was later revived with the Dragon Balls (Frieza only kills him in the anime[27]).
  • Frieza Force – In the movie all of the soldiers are killed by Frieza after they were defeated by the Z Fighters. In the anime, Frieza kills all of the soldiers simply by transforming into his final form, the resulting power surge killing them all.
  • Everyone on Earth - Frieza destroys Earth during his fight with Vegeta, killing everyone on the planet, except for Whis, Beerus, Goku, Gohan, Piccolo, Krillin, Tien Shinhan, Master Roshi, Bulma, and Jaco. Whis utilized his time manipulation powers to rewind time so that Goku could stop Frieza from destroying Earth, thus preventing their deaths.

Reception

  • Frieza's name is a pun on all things relating to the cold. As both Cooler's and Frieza's names end in a short "a" vowel (rather than the long "ā" which usually signifies "er" in kana spellings on English words), Frieza's name is typically spelled with an "a" at the end (as opposed to "Freezer"). Logic would follow that the character's name should in turn be spelled in a similar fashion (as opposed to "Cooler"). Note that FUNimation Entertainment, the company responsible for Dragon Ball's production and distribution in North America and Australia, chooses to spell the name as Cooler (and Freeza as Frieza). It might also be a pun on him being more composed and serious than his brother, who would ergo be the "cooler" brother.
  • His voice as done by Linda Young in the English FUNimation dub is criticized; with that and various features in his character design like his dark colored lips leads to some gender confusion with new fans.[29]
  • Frieza was mentioned as one of the "most beloved characters" in an article by GamePro.[30] Also on pages D1 and D3 of The Ledger's December 8, 1999 paper, he is one of the reasons that DBZ was listed as a violent show for children back then stating, "In one recent episode, beads of sweat form on the brow of a character named Vegeta, as he is nearly strangled to death by an evil foe named Frieza. In another, Frieza uses the horns on his head to impale a good guy named Krillin through the chest." [31] As well as opinions on his appearance: "Little Gohan is abruptly in the icy metallic grip of one of his arch-nemeses, Frieza, a silvery androgynous giant who looks like a cross between the monster in Alien and Batman's Mr. Freeze." [32]
  • Additionally, Frieza is on the "Top Ten Anime Villains" of all time by watchmojo.com and is ranked as #1 on the list.[33]
  • He was also in a "List of the Top 11 Anime Villains" made by That Dude in The Suede (an affiliate of That Guy with the Glasses) in which Frieza is ranked #6.[34]
  • A Spanish thrash metal band named Crisix has made a song called "Frieza The Tyrant", from the album Rise...Then Rest. The song is an homage to "the most evil villain in Dragon Ball", as described by the band, and lyrics are about the darkness of Frieza's nature and the end of his empire.[35] The song's introduction is a remix of "Genkidama", from Dragon Ball Z's Japanese original soundtrack.
  • A Japanese nu metal band named Maximum the Hormone even dedicated a song to Frieza, titled "F". The titular reference to Frieza's name as simply "F" would later inspire Akira Toriyama in his choice to title the upcoming 2015 movie involving Frieza's resurrection, Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection "F".

Trivia

  • His name is a rephrase of "freezer."
  • In an interview with Akira Toriyama, he revealed that Frieza is a combination of all his worst fears and childhood nightmares.
  • Frieza is the final villain in the Dragon Ball manga to have a desire for the Dragon Balls.
Pure Gold Frieza

Pure Gold Frieza

  • Frieza has a merchandise only joke form called "Pure Gold Frieza" which is based on Golden Frieza. It is stated by Frieza that this form is the result of him "over training" - causing him to gain an Ultimate Evolution-like state that is pure gold in appearance.[36]
  • An error in the FUNimation dub had Frieza (in his first form) saying he was 530,000 times stronger than Nail, who had a power level of 42,000. This meant that Frieza's power level was 22,260,000,000. In the original Japanese dub Frieza states he has a power level of 530,000 and he later states this in the FUNimation dub of Dragon Ball Z Kai as well.
  • Frieza's third form somewhat resembles a Xenomorph from the Alien film series, particularly in skull structure and his dorsal spines (in addition, Cooler's final form vaguely resembles a Predator).
  • The fight between Goku and Frieza was the longest in the Dragon Ball Z anime, at 19 episodes. It is also considered to be the longest recorded fight in an anime, clocking in at roughly 3.5 hours of screentime.
  • Frieza survived one of the most horrific injuries in the series: the loss of the lower half of his body, his right eye, the upper part of his head and his left arm.
  • Frieza has his tail cut off three times. The first time is when he was in his second form, when Krillin chops it off with a Destructo Disc, though it seems to regenerate when he enters his final form. The second is when he is hit by Goku's Spirit Bomb, as part of it is unable to withstand the blast and thus comes off. The third is when he is cut in half by his own attack, the energy disks slice off his body in half, along with one arm and his tail.
  • In addition, Frieza is chopped in half twice during his lifetime. The first is when he is chopped horizontally in two by his own energy disk. The second is when Future Trunks slices him vertically in half, seconds before chopping him to pieces and completely destroying him. In Dragon Ball GT, Frieza is chopped in half a third time while fighting Goku in Hell and using Krillin's Destructo Disc technique against him, which Goku turns back on him.
  • Frieza is the second villain to be defeated by Goku and return as a cyborg. The first is Mercenary Tao. Interestingly, both characters suffered grave injuries resulting in receiving cybernetics because of dirty attacks towards Goku (i.e. begging for mercy, and then attacking Goku when his guard was let down), and both were given cybernetics by a relative of theirs. They were also both defeated very quickly after reappearing by someone other than Goku.
  • Frieza had inspired many other villains in the Shonen genre, notably Orochimaru from the Naruto series. During the first Naruto series animation run, Makashi Kishimoto remarked that he hoped Orochimaru would get a Seiyu just like Frieza's.
  • Frieza is the only villain to be revived by the Dragon Balls.
  • In the Dragon Ball Xenoverse: Parallel Quests, if the Future Warrior (as a Frieza Clan) fights against Frieza, he will decide to annihilate them for rebelling. Showing that he has no qualm over killing even members of his own race, like the several other races he killed.
