The Saiyan/Human blood combination is stronger than just pure Saiyan, due to the fact that Humans have mercy and compassion rather than just mindless brute force. Goku was a low-class Saiyan, but because of his growing up on Earth he was exposed to these Human emotions which made him stronger. This fact plagues Vegeta and forever haunts him from the beginning -- "Why/How is this low class Saiyan stronger than me?". This also explains why Gohan, Goten, and Trunks were able to transform at such an early age.
