The main members of the school were Master Roshi and Master Shen. Mutaito taught his students the basis of all ki-based techniques. This knowledge was later used by Roshi to develop the technique would become his and Goku's (and many others) signature ki-based attack, the Kamehameha.

In the anime, Goku travels to the past via the Pendulum Room to a period before Mutaito's battle with King Piccolo (back when he was teaching a slightly younger Roshi and Shen in the way of the martial artist) and trained in Mutaito's Training Academy.[1]

Later, King Piccolo's Demon Clan attacked the dojo of Master Mutaito. Though the skilled and powerful martial artists were able to fight and kill a few of King Piccolo's minions, this battle came with a hefty price. Only Roshi and Shen survived the battle, and they narrowly managed to destroy the remaining minions. Mutaito himself died when he used the Evil Containment Wave to trap King Piccolo inside an Electric Rice Cooker.

Following this, Master Shen created the Crane School and trained his young brother Tao, and Roshi created the Turtle School with his first students being Gohan and the Ox-King.

Insignia[]

Mutaito's school symbol

The symbol of Master Mutaito's Training Academy (武) is pronounced bu in Japanese and means "martial arts"/"martial artist" or "military". This symbol is worn by those trained under Master Mutaito. It is also the logo for the World Martial Arts Tournament.

The school color is purple, but Mutaito wears white. As teens, Shen is allowed to wear green and Roshi is allowed to wear blue. They both take to wearing the traditional purple gi later as young adults.

Legacy[]

After becoming teachers themselves, Roshi and Shen create their own martial arts schools, the Turtle School and the Crane School, teaching their own ki-based techniques. Master Roshi invents the Kamehameha, while Master Shen invents the Sky Dance and Dodon Ray. Both masters take on a second generation of students. Roshi took on Grandpa Gohan and Ox-King, and later Goku, Krillin, and Yamcha. Shen took on his younger brother Tao, and later Tien Shinhan and Chiaotzu.

Trivia[]

  • The two students always with Master Shen resemble the bullies of the Orin Temple.
  • In the anime, all of the students are shown using the Tri-Beam during the King Piccolo wars. It is unclear if Shen learned it from Mutaito or invented it himself.
