NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan (formerly Geneon Universal Entertainment) is a Japanese anime/music producer and distributor. Their North American branch, formerly Pioneer Entertainment, translated and distributed anime and related merchandise in the region. It notably released some of the original Dragon Ball Z in-home episodes before Funimation took on the task. Pioneer also released the first three Dragon Ball Z movies: Dead Zone, The World's Strongest, and The Tree of Might.

Trivia[]

  • Some fans have blamed Pioneer/Geneon for the censorship found in the first 53 dubbed episodes of Dragon Ball Z. This is incorrect, as Pioneer was only involved in the home video distribution of those episodes. The censorship was instead being done by rights holders FUNimation, on insistence of TV distributors Saban Entertainment.
