The Super Saiyan

With an entire planet for their battleground, Goku and Freeza continue their showdown to see who's strongest in the universe! But Goku's determination turns to horror as he realizes that his enemy has just been toying with him...and at just 50% of his full power, Freeza is more than strong enough to beat Goku! Gohan, Piccolo and Kuririn distract Freeza while Goku powers up for a gigantic genki-dama—the last-ditch "energy sphere" technique. Soon, the heroes have no choice but to hope for a miracle…[1]

Story[]

Son Goku was Earth's greatest hero, and the Dragon Balls—which can grant any wish—were Earth's greatest treasure. When Vegeta attacked Earth, killing thousands and causing the Dragon Balls to be destroyed, Goku and his friends went to planet Namek, where the Dragon Balls were originally made. But instead of simply borrowing the Namek's Dragon Balls and going back to Earth, our heroes found themselves defending the peaceful Namekians against the forces of Freeza, the most powerful villain they had ever faced! Freeza's power proved to be beyond anything they could imagine, and Gohan, Kuririn and Piccolo were powerless against him. Goku, the strongest, put up a good fight—until he found that Freeza had only been toying with him, not even using half of his full power…[1]

Volume introduction by Akira Toriyama[]

The cover flap image

"To be honest, I'm always struggling to come up with something to write about here. If you're busy working on a weekly serial, then there shouldn't be anything all that special happening in your life to write about. What's even more painful is coming up with the "What's happening this issue" promo text for the table of contents page in Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine. This is a secret, but more than half of the comments made on that page are actually written by the editor, Mr. Kondo. He always asks me, "Did anything interesting happening this week?" Nothing really did…"[1]

Info below is retrieved from Viz Media.[1]

  • Son Goku - The greatest martial artist on Earth, he owes his strength to the training of Kame-Sen'nin and Kaiô-sama, and the fact that he's an alien Saiyan. To get even strongest, he is training under 100 times Earth's gravity.
  • Kaiô-sama - The "Lord of the Worlds", he is Kami-sama's superior in the heavenly bureaucracy. He taught Goku the Kaiô-ken and other amazing techniques.
  • Bulma - Goku's oldest friend. Bulma is a scientific genius. She met Goku while on a quest for the seven magical Dragon Balls, which, when gathered together, can grant any wish.
  • Kuririn - Goku's former martial arts schoolmate.
  • Son Gohan - Goku's four year-old son, a half-human, half-Saiyan with hidden reserves of strength. He was trained by Goku's former enemy Piccolo.
  • Vegeta - The evil Prince of the Saiyans. He hoped to become the legendary "Super Saiyan"—the strongest being in existence—and defeat Freeza, so he could rule the universe himself. Later he teamed up with the other heroes out of convenience, but at the end Freeza brutally killed him with a Death Beam.
  • Piccolo - Goku's former arch-enemy, the Namekian Piccolo is the darker half of Kami-sama, the deity who created Earth's Dragon Balls. If Piccolo dies, Kami-sama dies too, and if Kami-sama dies, Earth's Dragon Balls will vanish (In a similar way, Namek's Dragon Balls are tied to the life force of the dead Great Elder of Namek.)
  • Freeza - The ruthless emperor and #1 landowner of the universe. He invaded Namek to steal its Dragon Balls and wish for immortality, but the heroes fouled up his plans. Now he has sworn to destroy them all.
  • Dende - A young Namekian with healing powers. He was killed by Freeza.
